Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    @Hector Sequera

āpple replaced my friends macbook after the third logic board replacements. so if it died in within 90 days of warranty its kind of a good and bad at the same time.

    For ps3specialist

It is not an environmental problem , or it is the same problem that other consoles or laptops. The problem is that apple cares that this does not happen on their computers, and that what differentiates Apple from the competition is to buy quality products. Hence the price of their equipment. If the difference in price of a laptop apple against the competition would not be justified.

Shop the strength of a brand , teams with proven reliability. In fact there is no brand that has as faithful as apple customers and that's a lot. These reliability and duration thereof. I myself own an iphone 3gs that works like the first day.

The Macbook pro 2011 error . ( I'm not any expert)

1 That the processor and graphics card are close together.

2 The computer is not able to dissipate the heat of these two together.

3 The quality of welds and plate amd thermal paste are not of sufficient quality with regard to apple standards . As they passed the same as the other devices. With the difference that you do not buy a product of 600 euros. You buy a apple product and if you spend 2000 euros in a professional product. Expect professional quality.

So the error is not an error as any other team. It is a fundamental error that apple should fix . And I think what I will do , so this brand trusted by millions of loyal consumers .

I refer to the evidence, the plates of the 2011 Macbook pro without the vga amd work like the first day.

@ps3specialist  I'll stick with Apple products as I prefer them and use numerous machines in my work as well as personally; you won't catch me threating never to buy another Apple product. But how is " bad connection between the graphics chip and the logic board" not Apple's problem?  Blaming them for their unreliable production practices seems perfectly understandable.  But if you are actually saying that the bad connection is not a result of their initial construction then there is something inherently wrong with the whole design.  Surely "the high temperature of the GPU" is something that is factored into the design? Would you build an oven and then say it can't be used over 150 degrees because of the way it's made?

PS I'm writing this on my perfectly useable G4 Powerbook which has lived under the same environmental conditions for much longer than the MBP.

I see your points , I am not trying to defend Apple but anyay you are giving a consumer openion and of course as a consumer you want a product that last for good but I am telling technical facts or you can explain to me why some of them last for a year others for two years and others for five years or even longer?! they are all the same with the same exact logic board, design and components, the differnce is always the environmental factors and the user not the computer or the technology used to build it and as I said it happens with every electronic product regardeless of the manufacturer whether its Apple, Sony, HP, Dell , Acer , Microsoft , Gateway , you name it , they all suffer the same issues at one point of time. Some of the pictures I posted before show some of these environmental factors and beleive me I see wonders specially when people try to fix them on their own.

Somebody should write a book "Backing your Mac for dummies". It works. Don't know for how long, but in my opinion: Once the soldering started to melt, the force from itself will put it in the right place (don't know the right word..The force which makes water drops always looking like balls..^^)

    0. Completely clean everything, be careful! (otherwise probably one part of the gpu is hotter than the other, not good?!)

    1. I wrapped backing paper/wax paper around the board (except GPU)

    2. I wrapped alu foile around the board (except GPU)

    3. Preheated the oven, checked temperature (175-185°C)

    4. Put in the board for 8min, put some soldering right to the gpu (like on the alu foile)

    5. After 8 min opened the door

    6. Waited for 1-2 min to let it cool down a bit

    7. put it out

    8. Connected everything

    9. Short test (without any thermal paste)

    10. Will wait for a bit and test again

    11. Then put everything together again.

Everythings seems fine. Will report for how long though..

    Hey to all of you...

Just yesterday I had the "whole screen turning blue" experience followed by the horrible graphic errors today, while in photoshop. After 30 min of research, you see me shocked. I mean, we're talking about 312 PAGES of posts by users in this discussion!!!

How is it possible, that Apple doesn't do **** about fixing this problem (as it seems like a serial error)?

Or did they already take sides in any sort?

I feel absolutely lost and I'm not gonna spend 500-600 Euro (which is about 1/4 of what I paid in the first place ) just to "fix" this problem.

    Come on apple! REPLY!

    Calvinogood,

    Don't know him personally,

He is in some groups, forums etc about rework, reballing, knew he was from your area.

    How can I contact you?

Will ask him to give details and let you know.

I really have to thank ps3specialist, as I sent in my Late-2011 15" MBP after I was quoted $1500 to replace the logic board down here in Puerto Rico.

Mine completely failed, as it would immediately would cause a kernel panic when it tried to activate the AMD GPU, and even trying to force the Intel integrated one with gfxcardstatus would crash the machine.

I got it back about a month ago, and it's running as good as new.

Thanks again ps3specialist for fixing my MBP!

He seems to do excellent work. I'll be sending mine off to him in a couple of weeks. I can get by on my Windows notebook while it's away... he was very quick to respond to my queries and just really nice via email!
