Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Bug on the screen for a few day, then grey screen with crash, not possible to reboot anymore, grey/green apple with horizontal dead lines, then grey screen and nothing else just fan running very loudly.

(I have been able just once to reboot (miracle?) and using gfxCardstatus, I noticed the name of the card wasnt written (just the word "card"), in preference i choose the option "intel intagrated only" but avfter a day it crash again and i never turn the macbook on again)

No, i cant boot anymore, last time the mac was running it was using integrated, then it freeze and now it refuse to restart again (apple, lines, grey screen), i thought there was an "hardaware" way (pressing a key for example) to force it booting on raedon or intel GPU

Try booting in safe mode by keeping the shift key pressed during starup. This may help.

HellBoy, exact same issue here. If you keep attempting to boot it will work eventually. Try leaving it on the grey/blue screen for a little while and then rebooting.

Same problem here. I see it's a recurring thing... My Mac book pro is a late 2008 though.

    Hi dyspolishchuk,

I was thought as you, but this the known issue for all MBP 2011 in the market. Nobody willing to take 2011 models

First my home MacBook Pro dies due to this issue (15", 2.0 GHz model). Now my work one does two weeks later (15", 2.2 GHz model). I work for a big company with a lot of MacBook Pros floating around. The IT guy said he has definitely seen this issue already and is preparing for the possibility of replacing them all sooner than they were anticipating.

Add me to this list. Early 2011 MBP? Wonky graphics worsened to gray screen when booting.

I'm typing this right now my local Apple Store. Genius just said it passed diagnostics with no problem. Noticed 3rd party RAM (Crucial). Taking in the back now to swap out RAM with Apple RAM to see if that works.... stay tuned.

Two days ago my MacBook Pro 15" 2011 MD322A with 6770M gpu succumbed to the same problems... No apparent cause. Just shutdown on its own, then started up with distorted screen, won't boot, won't enter safe mode or recovery, no change after pram reset, blue screen with vertical black lines, white screen freeze, etc etc etc...

I've lost faith in Apple and this is the last product I purchase from them. 2 years and 4 months for a machine that costs this much is simply unacceptable. And the lack of support is startling from such a renowned brand.

I'd gladly send my laptop to one of the specialists in this thread for reballing (if that would solve it), but i live in the Philippines and logistics will be difficult and expensive. Perhaps I'll wait for Apple to budge, or for the next time I visit the US. Thanks to all here for your help, input, and support on an issue that Apple is simply ignoring.

    Good luck to us all.

Their diagnostics is crap, and it wont be able to detect the issue you are having. You can get the logic board replacement for free, but normally they won't give it out that easily.

    @benedictros

Have you tried to call AU support and explain your situation? My friends from Singapore tried and he got the logic board replacement for free.
