Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Thank you. I'll give this a try... According to my research and a number of other threads and posts, logic board replacements don't always fix the problem...

To the more technical members here, I have a question:

Why is it that a reballing is more effective at fixing this problem, whereas a logic board replacement isn't? Doesn't a new logic board also mean a new gpu? Or Am I misunderstanding things?

    @benedictros

Well my friends got new macbook replacement after their third board replacements. Reballing would void the warranty.

Replacing the GPU on your logic board means that you get a new GPU, whereas replacing the logic board at Apple means that they will put a refurbished logic board which will likely be affected of the same problem. However, reballing means that the GPU is removed, reballed and reused (am I wrong?).

I'm talking from experience, since I've had #3 different logic board replacements (original logic board + 3 other) and two of those replacements died within a week...

P.S: Apple finally gave me a brand new MacBook Pro Late 2013 15'' which I picked up last Friday.

    Regards,

    Álvaro.

I'm having the same issue. Call the apple hotline and state your case. I already had my logic board replaced last year around November. The problem recurred after 4 months so I called apple and after explaining my case I got a free replacement. And now, with the second replacement, I'm starting to see early signs of the same issue again.

The more heavy work you do on the machine the faster it going to die.

Same thing here. I have an macbook pro 2011 using an HD 6750m. I'm so mad with apple!! A mac like these here in Brasil costs more than 5.5k us. And having a computer that costs sooo dam much and it wont last 3 yrs???

The price to replace a logic board is more then 1k us.... In fact almost 1.5k. I will wait for a couple os months to see if apple does something, but if it don't.. Apple never again.  And i have, an iphone 5s, ipad air, and mini retina.. Will sell everything and go to Samsung!

    This is so disrespecting.

MatuzaBR, You should try the advice I give above. As long you can get an exemption from any Apple support you can get it repair anywhere. Most people have been success with this method and got their new macbook replacement. Personally, I also feels the same way but on the second thought threating them wont do anything.

Yeah, I'm a video editor / vfx artist. So it wouldn't take long after I opened an editing app to experience the glitch. You've got to be patient guys. We all paid a premium price. Apple's customer representatives are very polite so might as well talk to them and explain your case.

Anyone tried a 3rd party store for repairs and had success? I'd be willing to try this if I thought there was a decent chance of a solid repair. Not sure if there are repair shops here in Chicago that can handle this though.

Have you try the advice above? Repair is only a temporary solution and it'll die later. Many people have successfully get their whole macbook replaced after their third logic board replacements.

Agreed, I booked mine in and went and spoke to a Genius. No kicking and screaming, or referencing this thread calling all the 2011s faulty, just nice and calm. They gave me a quote, at which point I made my case and spoke to a manager. Apple are covering the cost of a replacement logic board for my machine, so I'm happy.

It passed all the diagnostics, but the fault was clearly visible.

    Hi MagicBoy,

Is you mac still under Apple Care? If I don't have apple care, I have to pay at least $310 by myself, right?

    Thanks,

    Kai

Nope. Over two years old, no Apple Care. Mac worked perfectly until it suddenly broke at the weekend.

Given the price of the machine there's some scope for invoking consumer law in the UK.

Which will probably not apply here in the US.

But I will try Apple regardless. Can't hurt.
