Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Can anyone suggest a foolproof situation to incur the problem?  I'm thinking about a visit to the fruit bar and want the machine to comprehensively fail in front of the assembled geniuses.

My MacBook won't boot anymore at all. Any time I try to boot up the problem persists and I can't enter any other mode, such as safe mode, diagnostic, recovery.. So it's case to case I believe. Some people mention that it happens Most when it begins to overheat. But others are like me, where they can't even boot the machine.

It's kind of awkward actually.. The first time it happened to me was the last time I got to boot My machine. Others have been able to boot up and go back into machine. But i never was able to anymore.

Right. I'm just wondering if any program or combination of programs can reliably make the video symptoms appear. Not booting is a good start for a complaint but it would be just my luck if it boots up without a problem.

Anything that uses the GPU extensively will do. Depending on which OS X you have that could be a lot or just a few applications as much work in the latest versions is GPU accelerated such as video rendering or even UI animation. If in doubt or you don't want to risk any data (a shutdown in the middle of a Final Cut render can be catastrophic...) use GpuTest from http://www.geeks3d.com/gputest/ . For me it would also result in subsequent boot failures...

That's depend on the country, and most people just accept the offer that apple gave you and never try to pursue the free one. You can get it for free if you know how, and those Genuis guy doesn't want to give it out that easily.

I'd called the Apple support several times, but failed. It's not that easy to get the FREE one indeed.

What country did you call? You have to know how to talk to them. The best one to call areAU and US.

Explain them your situtation and say your country support doesn't want talk to you, and keep asking them waht can they do for you. Tell them that other people have the same issue and get free repair. All they really need to put a note on your serial number your good to go. If they need proof of reciept then just let me know

    Another one bites the dust!

Late 2011 MacBook Pro here - was doing some work last night; everything running normally, closed the lid and put the MacBook onto my desk (unplugged), while having my coffee this morning, jumped on to check my emails - nothing! Screen completely blank.

Tried giving it a hard power toggle... once turning it on I can hear the startup sound, but everything else seems unresponsive.

Have tried resetting PRAM / NVRAM, Safe Mode, you name it. Absoloutely nothing.

    Pretty much the same as:

Not happy, as I have a pretty tight deadline looming for work and was planning on getting some stuff done on the weekend. Now I'm going to have to go into the office .

I really don't want to be going through 318 pages of comments, is someone able to sum up the best possible solution for this? I'm from Australia if it helps. I've read bits and pieces but the information is a little conflicting.

    Cheers!

It is now roughly 1 and a half months after I had my macbook reballed due to the #mbp2011 problem. My macbook was working fine again until this morning, when I got into the office, now it is back to grey screen or blue striped screen whenever I switched on. Now I need to acces my files, don't have a external casing for a mobile HDD so im trying to get it to boot somehow. After a month, spent over R2000 for the reball, this is so demoralising.

Im in South Africa, there are no Apple Stores here in Cape Town, only so called "iStores" which I'm guessing is the equivalent. These however charge a lot simply to get an appointment and have the machiene looked at. And I'm convinced I'll get the same treatment, being told to get a logicboard replacement for another R8000, not really solving the problem.

Oh and since the first time I had this problem, Ive made sure to only use the integrated GPU where possible and i've been keeping my macbooks temperature quite cool, so why this is happening again now I can't explain.

Since you reballed, it will happen again and again and that is what people dont know. The logic board replacements is not the way to solve the problem but its the way to get a new mac book replacement. You can get the replacement for free if you call other country for support, but since you reballed I'm not sure how thats going to work.

I've red of a couple of people who got their's reballed and haven't had issues since (or yet). I also somehow doubt Apple will hand out free macbooks to the thousands of people affected by the issue, even if we all buy one, two or three new logic boards. To a few lucky and persistant ones perhaps. I'd love to hear if anybody on these forums is still happy with a reballed machine.
