Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hi Guys,

two things I would like to share:

1, run starcraft2, or any GPU/CPU (both) heavy games for a little bit longer time period. The computer will crash.

2, if your computer cannot start at all, try this: unplug it, power on, drain the battery completely, plug in again. I am 99% sure the computer will recover.

works everytime for me, at least.

This might be a good idea.. Although I'm sure the only people who would be legally privileged to bring it up to Apple legal would be those who have really been screwed over after apple care. If its just any guy with a broken card, I doubt it would mean anything to them.

    A petition might work though.

Mine just went down too. I was able to restart after the first incedent, but after the second, I only see the apple logo with the spinner, and everything is tinted blue. After waiting longer than usual, a white (tinted blue) screen is displayed and stays there until I hold the power button.

On 2nd May 2014, My early 2011 Mac book Pro become unusable. First I saw the distorted screen while watching a movie and then a sudden crash. While rebooting it showed a blue screen. I consulted genius bar engineer and he told me it is just a bad luck that the Logic board is gone and I need to get it replaced but it will cost me £400. I am bit annoyed at this stage because my previous Toshiba Satellite laptop which I bough in 2005 for merely £300 lasted 6 years and £1600 Mac book Pro not even lasted full 3 years.

While looking at the Internet I found thousands of posts related to this problem. I cant understand how Apple can do this to there loyal customers. They must replace the logic board of all the machines for free.

    Hi again!

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I think more dead Mac Books added here will help a little also sending them feedbacks.

The Apple Senior Adviser here in Cork explained there are not enough reports about

this problem so they can`t reconice this as a collectiv one.

My Mac will see a AASP on tuesday, i am back after the procedure.

                             Have a nice one

All these MacBook Pros 15inch late 2011 machines seem to all have problems including mine. Mine just stopped working will not turn on, on 17April 2014. Took to Apple store and they quoted Aud$1000.00 to replace logic board. All these machines numbering in their thousands with similar faults. Surely it is A fault with the machine and apple should do a recall or fix every machine ! Fingers crossed.

Add my machine to the list. Took it in to an apple store here in NJ to get an official diagnostic and as suspected, my MBP late 2011 is in need of a logic board.  They offered me the standard offsite repair for $310 with a 90 day warranty or instore for $500+.  When I pushed the issue, I was offered a discount on a new laptop but no other resolution.

From some replies here, it seems that some stores will cover the logic board replacement free of charge.  Can those who have gotten this free of charge service please chime in and offer some advice?

Like most, I've been an avid apple fan but this is truly disappointing for such an expensive machine.

You should call the US or AU support first. Then explain your situtation. All they really need to do is put a note for exemption, but its normally depend on the person you talk to.

My laptop (15" MacBook Pro Late 2011) has also encountered the same issue, I have since written a feedback through the feedback form. As I'm from Singapore, there aren't any Genius Bars here so I went down to the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider and was told that I needed to fork out S$1,500 for the replacement of my logic board, this price is definitely not what I am seeing within the thread. The staff then advised me to get a new laptop as it was not worth the repair...

    Any suggestions?

Probably your MBP is a core i7 so when you replace the logic board you will also pay the price of the processor because MB logic boards have the CPU soldered to the board which means they are one unit and you can not transfer your CPU from the old logic board to the new one like any other brand laptop , the good news for you is that we can fix your computer if you send it in, it will cost you about 20% of the replacement logic board price including the return shipping cost and our repair comes with a full one year warranty just like the $1500 new logic board, here is a link for the service if you want to get it fixed : http://www.ps3specialist.com/macbook-pro-gpu-reballing-repair-service/

I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

I have called 3 times so far and talked to 3 different people. Same reply every time - Its out of warranty, its not recognized as a known issue and I need to take it to the store for repair. Pleading and constantly asking "is there nothing you can do for me" does not help.

So I have my appointment this week to visit the store and pay the $300. I honestly think Apple will not admit this as an issue which leaves us two choices. Send it to Apple for $300 + repair or send to Ps3specilist guy on these forums. I haven't seen many replies from perople who sent theirs to Ps3specialist so I can't comment on this option.

    Pretty ****** atm.

My early 2011 i7 MacBook Pro only a couple weeks after AppleCare expired started having these same issues. Boot to grey screen, lines on display, etc.

I am going to try Apple or even Tekserve. Hopefully it can be fixed.

Yes, from the posts of ps3specialist it does seem like he is very knowledgeable, but i do wish there was more feedback on his service and support.
