Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I see  a lot of unrealistic wishfull thinking here, when you buy a computer knowing that it has a one year warranty and after two or three years of use it fails and you ask for a free repair or free replacement that means you are not realistic , also thinking that moving to PC is the solution ?! you can move to PC but don't expect a better performance and longer life to be realistic , they all get the same issue of graphics failure most probably not in the first year but you will wake up one day to find the same problem happened, its the nature of any BGA packages that is soldered to a logic board , solder cracks or dead soldering pads develops over time due to high temprature , environmental factors and personal use factors - someone uses his computer for two hours a day and someone else is using his computer for twelve hours a day the life of the computer will not be the same, someone use his computer for a low graphics applications and someone else is using it for video edditing , the computer life will not be the same and so on - manufacturer gives you one year warranty regardeless of how many hours you will use it and at which environment and what applcations you will be using it for so I think - not defending any manufacturer - that is very reasonable and if the computer lasts twice or three times the manufacturer warranty giving the above conditions then its unrealistic to think of a manufacturer defect. Deffective products will not last for even few monthes.

I agree that asking for a full replacement is too much to ask... But replacing logic boards, which break again within weeks is not an option either.

You are doing reballing, which actually solves the problem, rather than just replacing a logic board with another one from that same date, which is probably gonna have the same issues in a short period of time, since it had the same environmental circumstances.

Apple should atleast provide a service similar to what you do, as there arent reballers in every country. This should also reduce the cost of repairing the macbooks, which makes it more affordable. I'm willing to pay a small amount (thus not the price of a new windows laptop a 600 euro) to repair my MBPro, but not when I know it will break in no-time again.

I will switch to a pc as next laptop. Simply because when I compared the specs of a macbook and a laptop, I can find laptops half the price as a new macbook. This saves me 1500 euro's which I can set aside to buy a new laptop whenever it breaks (which I still do not expect to be 2 years, as all laptops I have had, worked at least 4 years with a failing HDD here and there).

The mac specific software is a small loss, but there are workarounds on that, and they are becoming more and more viable every day.

Most of all the vision I had on Apple, being a company that cared for their customers, cares for the environment and global warming has been broken by  incidents like this. Again not because we dont get a free repair/replacement, but because their tossing and putting in a new logic board rather than fixing it is clearly not an environmentally caring measure in this case.

The problem is just like you stated, there is no enough reballers in every country and that is why even in the countries where you can find really good reballers we don't work for companies, why manufacturers would hire reballers knowing that the reballing procedure for most reballers would take three or four hours for each reballing so how many reballer they need to hire to service all their repairs that need reballing and where they will find them, the easy way for any manufacturer is to sell a new logic board which they all do in this situation.

OMG ive been wondering whats happening with my MBP and i have no idea that we are so many experiencing this. Mine is a MBP late 2011 15" with AMD Radeon HD 6750M.

This is insane.... You mean the only solution is a logic board  replacement worth $500+ Just a few $more i can get the new MBair.

Welcome to the party.  Save yourself all the hassel and struggle and just sell it asap while it still has ANY value (I"m seeing them on the street for 600 to 800 as a very high, nothing on fleabay is moving)...

Get a new MPB and just say, ok it costs 900 a year to own this laptop, 2700 USD divided by 3 years. Simple.
