Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Everyone is waiting for recall from Apple, but I do not put big hope since I got my MBP logic board replaced months ago. Get it fixed on our own cost, this is what Apple Support told me!

If you did not use yours probably it would have lasted for ten years or more!!  you can not just compare them with the date of purchase, to compare them they have to have the same configuration -  probably your cousin's Toshiba has a stand alone graphics card  not a built in like yours - and they have to be used in the same conditions, with same applications, same amount of use and same environment then you can compare between them which one wil llast longer, simply to compare two laptops for life span you need to have one variable which is the brand name and everything else has to be the same. Not defending anybody but this is how to make a scientific comparison, everything is fixed with only one variable so you can find the effect of that variable.

I used my MBP in air conditioned room with only 1-2 times out from my house  before the screen issue occured, it was taken care well ever since. I didn't expect Apple product broken down easily, it's sounds like ' Hey, you're out of luck!''

Here we go again....  There is no scientific approach required here.  This is statistical.  There is no control.  This is not a randomised controlled trial.  This is happening to a specific selection of machines that were manufactured by Apple in a certain period and statistically points to an issue with their manufacturing methods at the time.  If there is an outbreak of Ebola virus in downtown Cucamonga will you refuse to accept a connection because each individual is not identical? The expectation of more than two years life from a machine is NOT unreasonable. Comparisons with other machines is understandable.  I appreciate your insistence that it is not scientific but that is totally beside the point.

But no harm to try reballing as ps3specialist mentioned earlier, since we do not wish to replace the logic board. Atleast 1 year warranty will be given.

Of course , we are talking about 2011 MBP , that makes each one of them between two and half to three years old or more, expect a lot of failure, I still don't see a statistical manufacture defect at that age.

Computer life is calculated by the number of hours used not the number of years owned, some people will kill a computer in one year some others will keep the same computer running for ten years, there is no other way to measure it and that is why comparisons are not fair unless certain criterias are met , at the end people need a solution and I offer the solution, what do you offer them other than keep crying to Apple ?

By the way , I am not trying to make money from those people with paper weight $2000 computers , I repair them for $120 , almost the same cost of repairing a $200 playstation or xbox , most of that cost goes toward materials, equipments and energy so its about helping people not making money from them, once the summer starts I will be flooded with game consoles for repair and I will have to make repairing cost for these computers at least double and it will still be very cheap and that to controle the volume, reballing a laptop logic board takes twice as much the time it takes for a game console because of the disassembly and reassembly time so if someone is thinking about it don't think for too long.

I really wish I can fix it for you but its a hardware problem and remote repair is not an option.
