Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Could anyone say if had the problem before updating to Mac OS 10.9?

I am asking that because it seems to be that this problem has intesified after Mavericks launching. If so, anyone could "fix" or avoid this by downgrading the OS?

Ok.  Visited my local store, PeachMac. Diagnosed as a logic board failure. A $499 fix if your Mac has not been modified in any way....things like adding a second drive in place of the DVD drive, etc...and jumps to $800 plus if you've made any changes... Oh, $1300 if they detect water damage. Anyway, should have it back in 3-5 days.

I run a 10.6 partition for an old version of Pro Tools. Same issue on 10.6.8 and 10.9.2.

Same problem here. 600€ to repair a 2.2K€ laptop which has lasted only three years. I really hope Apple say something soon, because it really seems to be a widespread problem...

Has anyone tried with just a HD replacement, like a 3rd party SSD instead of the stock spinning rust? Same story?

My HD was replaced and the total charge by the local Apple Store was $180 since I had a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro.

    uk04,

When I took my machine to my local Apple Store they said that I was not eligible for 'depot repair' because I had upgraded my RAM and installed a SSD. Probably shaved a day or so off of having my logic board replaced. I kept the HD that came with my machine but not the RAM so it was impossible to put the machine back to 'factory settings.'

I suppose that this should serve as some sort of warning - even though Apple gives you the instructions on how to upgrade RAM and HHD/SSD, you're penalized if you have done so in terms of service.

I was told the same thing, Clinton. Kind of ridiculous.

I'm going to go on the Apple site and leave feedback. I'm torn on doing a reballing repair because if a recall *is* ever done, I'm out of luck. But what are the odds?

Whenever I take my MBP in, I re-install the original RAM. It takes only 5 minutes and gives them one less reason to nitpick. They didn't say anything about my upgraded HDD, though.

Some joy with my Genius visit.  They've offered to replace the logic board at no cost to me.  I know this means I'll have a board with the same potential shortcomings but it's a start.  My machine is early 2011 Macbook Pro 17" purchased in November 2011 with no Apple Care.

I'll post more once I get the machine back.

How did the visit go and what made them decide to help you out like that? Does it seem  they more aware of the issue? Or was it just luck?

Fixed my MB Pro 15 2011 with a professional reballing here in Portugal, 160 €, 6 months warranty. It's working perfectly. While coding and browsing, temps are always below 45ºC and running very quielty.
