Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Looks strange to me, there's no reason to spin at 4000RPM. If you're sure there's no application running that mucks with the speeds I'd suggest doing a SMC reset.

CPU ist 96% idling, SMC reset didn't change a thing :-/

SMCFancontrol is a workaround, but it would be nice to know, what is going wrong...

    Thx anyway!

    Argh. Got it!

Istats Menu's "fan setting" was set to "medium".
    With "default" everything is fine.

    Sorry, my fault

    Thx. Florian

I replaced logic board (470 euro, 602 dollars. Russia).

    Then I reinstalled MAC OS X 10.9.2

I installed gfxCardStatus v 2.3 and smcFanControl. I try not to raise the temperature above 50 degrees Celsius.

Now the laptop is much more stable.

I think to buy Cooling system and put it under the laptop.

Also, I think I will clean the dust every six months.

I hope that the laptop will run for at least two years.

I am very angry at the company Apple.

Hi Gedankenstrom, have you install gfxCardStatus v 2.3 or smcFanControl after clean installation of mavericks 10.9.2?

Update: the second logic board replacement failed at the Apple Store during testing. I've been told the third logic board replacement failed as well. Now they want me to remove the data doubler I have in it so they can continue repairs (likely a depot repair). Incredible inconvenience considering the data doubler was not an issue for the last three attempts.

I've heard about the semi-official policy regarding replacing after the fourth major failure. I've also read conflicting reports from Apple, users and OWC about the status of my warranty (198 days left) given the presence of the data doubler.

I'm not really sure what I will do next. If Apple doesn't make this right and I spent $2600 plus about $600 more on RAM and SSD upgrade, that puts total cost of ownership at $1600/yr for the 2 years this machine ran properly. That's a hard sell for any IT department and a big fat "I told you so..." I get to hear from our IT Director who is not a Mac fan anyway.

Note: this is my first Macbook. Up until this I used Mac Pros and would often boast of the 8 years that I was able to use the one I had in college before needing to buy a new one (it was a PPC). I was hoping to get at least 4 years out of the MacBook Pro by maxing the ram and adding the SSD.

    Hey guys,

    I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz late 2011 Memory: 10 GB

    2 x HD 750.16 GB 5400 rpm and 1 x 250 SSD

Bought my Macbook Pro in 28/06/2012. I have no Apple Care.

Yesterday 10th of May 2014 my screen went to white with vertical lines after restart my screen got vertical lines or horizontal lines. I was working with Premiere Pro editing software with a blackmagic intensity extreme capture box connected via HDMI to my Dell 2701 screen.

Reboot several times in safe mode then my screen turned into Blue with Vertical Lines.

Did several reboot but with no succes my Macbook screen start with Apple Logo and end with white screen.

Top left keyboard got hot and fans are working hard.

I did a hardware test starting up with keyboard key D result was no trouble found.

Reading this forum and checked some screenshots It looks like that I have the same problem as a lot of other users.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with an Apple Repair centre.

Do you guys have some tips for me to resolve this problem ?

    Thank you,

    AndyGee
