Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Alright, I guess I'm joining the club now

Really dissappointed in apple.. I don't expect my machine to last forever, but cmon 3 years is a rather short durability period. And given how widespread this problem is, I believe that this is a manifacturer defect, apple should've warned us that we were buying a product with a ticking time bomb. Not cool

The apple repair centre informed me that the videochip on the logic systemboard is broken.

The only solution is to replace the board for € 659.14

I ask them can I have the board. They say that this is not possible because Apple want all the broken systemboards back. This is their policy and if I want to have the board then it costs me over € 900,- ex 21% Taxes. I bought this very expensive computer and think you are the owner. But Apple is the owner of the hardware. I think that they want to do research on the systemboards.

What do you think guys ?

Guys Is their an other repair solution ?

Research?!!!!!!!! the cause of all these problems is well known to owners and technicians , what they need a research for? where do you think they get the refurbished logic boards that they sell? these boards are all repairable and that is why they want to have them , they will fix and sell to someone else with the same problem, that is how they make money on repairs. The solution is reballing the graphics chip, search for someone that can do that in your country or any other country, whichever cost you less and gives you a better warranty.

I read from a lot of users that the best repair solution for this known problem is Reballing the Graphic Chip.

    Thanks man.

My MacBook Pro 15 (2011 late) bought in Feb 2012 joined the club with no warnings when I was working with Adobe indesign. At first, I thought it was due to overload until I found the club. I cannot even boot it now.

I am going to App Store in Tokyo to see the ’genius' tomorrow. Do any guys here have similar experience in Tokyo?

Anyway, I will not pay for logic board as most of you suggested. If I failed tomorrow, I will try to find somewhere to reball my board.

Is this apple's solution towards the former problems?

Andy, WHERE DO YOU LIVE ? In Europe? Which country?

If you are in Europe you most likely have 2 YEARS WARRANTY, no matter what the store stays.

The best other repair solution is reballing. But as I said, if you are in Europe you have warranty... use it.

Might fail again later but at least it goes into Apple's statistics.

I do repair them, reball, replace chips etc.

Of course every repair I get is profit for me.

But believe me, I prefer there comes a solution from Apple for their customers.

If they claim it's premium product...

Which it technically speakin in fact is not. It's just a laptop, same components as others, "retina" is only a standard LG panel. etc.....)

Selling a laptop for that price and then not take responsibilty for it when it massively fails....

    Hey man,

    I live in The Netherlands.

They informed me because you work for yourself the customer warranty of 2 years is not valid. So I cannot do a custome claim. All registered business have only 1 year warranty :-(

So If I did not work for myself then they could fix the systemboard video problem for free.

We zullen uit beleefdheid toch maar in 't Engles verdergaan?  ;-)

Another rediculous rule. I know warranty is regulated like that.

But for most PC laptops I know it's not a problem.

Might depend if you bought it directly or through a third party (store, independent webshop).

Apple is really applying every rule they can for their benefit if possible.

Just like it took them a few fines or even threatening them if they didn't change their warranty policy to 2 years they would be banned from selling their products (was in Italy i think).

Overrated, overprced, profit only... really corporate for the money only business these days...

If your lucky/unlucky enough to live in the UK even if your warrenty has expired there is still hope.

Under the sales of good act 1979

(2A)For the purposes of this Act, goods are of satisfactory quality if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price (if relevant) and all the other relevant circumstances.

(2B)For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

(a)fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,

    (b)appearance and finish,

    (c)freedom from minor defects,

    (d)safety, and

    (e)durability.

Based on this statement, and the fact that this is clearly not an isolated case but is infact impacting a large number of owners, which inturn implies that this is a design or manufacturing fault that as things stand Apple would appear to be in breach of the Act.

    Details here ...

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1979/54

I've yet to confirm this, but if Apple decline to assist, I believe there are grounds to take this to the small claims court.

Regardless of where you are. Good luck in getting this resolved!

Hi, I'm also in Tokyo. Please let me know what the Genius said. I have no idea where to get this reballing done here but my macbook is still not entirely dead and I'm still hoping Apple will offer free repairs if I wait longer.

I also couldn't boot (white screen) but found this advice: turn the macbook on, close it and put it under a blanket and wait for it to overheat. It then shuts down and it seems the next time you boot it, it boots with the integrated graphics chip instead so at least it starts for me and I can use gfxCardStatus to prevent it from switching to the discrete graphics card.

My reservation is tomorrow night in Ginza. I will tell the result after that. And I might go to Akihabara to find the reballing service also. I am not optimistic with the repair tomorrow because I found few responds in Apple Japan.

Thank you for your advice, however, I am not going to try it until tomorrow's repair. It is just too annoying to try all ways to do sth as simple as boot. I have already got tired of it.

    iceman,

    after clean install try this...

    1. Settings > Energy Saver > tick OFF Automatic graphic switching...

Note: Delete gfxCardStatus if you have installed it. (because with gfxCardStatus it will tick ON Automatic graphic switching everytime you reboot/restart)
