Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Mine has the same problem recently. MBP 17'' 2011. Blue strips and black screen with system lock out.

It's sad that Apple macbook only last for 2 years. Please have a product recall, Apple! How can you expect customers to trust you again if you do not address this issue and remained silent?

I had the same similar situation last year september 2013. Luckily i had applecare and they swapped a motherboard for me.

If it isn't for the applecare. I would have been stuck with a broken notebook.

But this isn't a solution, what if the problem persist again?? Apple needs to do something about this,

As stated. This was one of my options previously. The moment i switch to descrete graphic card, the screen went with lots of lines and could not even work. Showed this to the apple service center and explain to them that it's the graphic issue as they insisted it was due to OS related.

    Shivakspt,

You've really only two options if you no longer have AppleCare:

    1. Pay Apple to replace the logic board (expensive and doesn't usually fix the issue for long), or
    2. Pay to have your GPU reballed ($140-200USD and, if done properly, a more permanent fix).

Those are really your only options.

    Sorry,

    Clinton

same thing. Freezing at startup with a gray screen and when it does get through, it has verticle lines.

    Hi!

In 2011 I was glad that after the Nvidia-Problem my new MacBook Pro was equipped with an AMD GPU but not for long. About every 14 days the display showed artefacts and the Machine was still working (music played on an so) but the graphics was stuck.

It's getting worse, now I have to restart the machine evey week to avoid those problems.

Apple should admit it is a serial fault and offer a repair program.

    Regards,

    Bjoern

Thanks for this info, I live in the UK and am having GPU issues with my 2011 15 inch i7 2.0ghz mbp. Although if Apple offered to fix mine they would probably turn me away as I have removed my optical drive to put in an extra hdd.

If you still have the optical drive put it back in. The genius I spoke to said that if they cannot see something obvious that has changed with the internals (other than memory or hard disk) they won't care. So if you put it back to factory setup then you should be fine.

I have to join the club - my 17" died slowly 10 days after the applecare period expierd. March 12.

Talked to Apple Support Norway - they were not familiar with the ongoing problem.

Let's cross fingers for a replacement program.

I have a 2011 2.3GHz MacBook Pro and it's now unusable. Initially I thought it was just a system crash but gradually got worse and then the fans would go to full speed snd the top left of the computer became very hot. Tried limiting its use of the GPU but that essentially makes it only useful for emails. Now refuses to boot into the desktop.

My 2011 MacBook Pro is back from the Apple Store and I'm 600 CHF lighter. Shame on you, Apple.

    Hello,

I understand that using the integrated chip is not the most elegant solution but I don't get your point of "this is limited to emails".

A huge amount of MBP were sold in 2011 without any discrete video chp (this is the case for 100% of the MBP 13in).

I personnaly use my MBP 15 with integrated chip forced with the gfx utility and I *never* encountered any problem at all with my applications (email, safari, vlc, parallels desktop, etc). The only thing I didn't test is Photoshop of very high-end graphical apps.
