Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I started experiencing these exact problems yesterday, after a number of years without issues. Thus, it may be only a matter of time before my E11 15" MBP dies on me... As suggested previously, everyone should contact Apple feedback and let them know the extent of this issue:

Hopefully we will also be included in the Graphics Card Replacement Program that Apple set up for iMacs with similar issues.

Seriously?! Apple deleted my post regarding bringing this issue to Revision3 to get Apple's attention.

If only they would fix GPUs as fast as they fix comments.

One thing I noticed was that the p3tition in the title only addresses early 2011 models.  I have a late model MBP 17 i7 that crashed after only 14 months.  It might leave folks with later models with the idea that they would not be included with a recall.   As time goes on I beleive that no matter which model you have, it WILL experience this issue with the GPU.  This was my first Apple product.  Looks like it will be my last.  I have a 10 year old Dell and it's working without issue.  I am so frustrated with Apple and this product.

With my MBP being so unreliable now and me not wanting to pay for a new Logic board to experince the same issue in another 6months to a year I am thinking of walking away from Apple and purchasing a new Laptop from Lenovo.

My nearest Apple store is 30 miles away is it worth taking it in store for them to say I need to purchase a new logic board as 2 and a half years since purchase isnt gonna get me a free repair is it now?

Not a happy bunny, wish I had took it back in when I had the once a week crash within its warranty.

I had sent Macbook pro to a professional technician here in Edinburgh. I had explained to him the issues I was having and I also to told him that I had already replaced the thermo paste on the graphic cards chip and it worked temporality and then it all started again. He said that contrary to most people believe the issue was with the CPU/Integrated graphic card. He’d cleaned the whole mother board and replaced the thermo paste on all the chips and now my macbook pro is back to normal running at 28ºC and no crash at all.

I'd stay the heck away from this technician since he's obviously completely clueless. It's not a believe but a known fact that the GPU is the culprit here. Of course only if you have the same problem, that is.

Yes, I also got the impression that it is related to the internal GPU and not the dedicated one. I have an external screen attached and have had a lot of freezes, blue and white screens and restarts and split screens for some weeks, but then I turned off graphics card switching in the energy settings and no crash since then (more than a week now, maybe I was just happy, but it works for the moment). I am using the machine for XCode programming at the moment, so nothing graphically demanding.

I just took my MacBook Pro into the Apple store. They diagnosed a logic board/GPU problem as expected.  I tried to get them to cover the cost of the repair, but they wouldn't budge...said that it wasn't covered by a "Quality Policy" or something like that. Gee thanks.

So I ended up opting for the $310 depot repair.  Will take 5-7 days. And of course, I have no guarantee that the new logic board won't have the same problem - warranty only lasts 90 days.

I'm really disappointed in Apple for not standing behind their quality on this, and requiring their customers to pony up cash for something that is obviously a hardware design flaw.

OK, just got MBP 2011 back from Apple via our local PeachMac store. Quoted $499 to replace logic board. They ended up replacing the logic board, DVD drive, clamshell cover and wireless card for the same price. So that was good. But I'm still out $499 on a three year old computer that should have lasted six years. Given the number of failures for these laptops, I can't imagine how Apple could simple ignore it.
