Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yup you are right they are reading it.

    It's garnering lots of attention.

To all, don't do reballing or anything if apple is about to call back or have a replacement program.

I'm waiting patiently to see what is apple gonna do.

My advice.  If you can find a local or regional person that does "reballing", get it done.  It will get your MBP up and running.

wish that p etition also covered late 2011 models. Because I'm having the problem on late 2011. I signed it anyways. Still Unbelievable the number of new victims every day, the number of deleted and edited posts and yet not a single word from Apple. It's as though they are just buying time to say that our models are Too old and don't deserve their action. So terrible how we are being treated.

This site keeps either removing or editing my posts.  So much for free speech.  Just imagine what is really being posted and Apple wont let us see it.

I have had probably 12 posts blocked by apple. Ridiculous. Just fix the problem and we will stop.

Interesting to compare the reaction of Apple to that of car manufacturers when they have a defective product. To quote from a current news story:

"Industrywide, automakers are moving faster to fix problems than they have in the past in a bid to avoid bad publicity and record fines from government agencies."

Obviously government agencies don't really care if our computers die an early death because of a manufacturing defect, because no one has died, but we've got to make sure that Apple pays the price in terms of bad publicity.

All, how is the service with ps3specialist?   I've seen a few people using it... I'm about ready to pull the trigger, but I want to hear feedback.  Sounds like it has been quick.  Can anyon else comment and validate it's good?

Usually Apple deletes post because they violate the TOU

These are Apple forum so that they have that right

Everytime I begin to tell people how great he is, the forum folks delete my posts.  They do not want anyone promoting another business on an Apple forum.

"Industrywide, automakers are moving faster to fix problems than they have in the past..."

I'm not sure that the decade that GM took to fix the ignition switch problem would qualify as "faster".

"They do not want anyone promoting another business on an Apple forum."

And, that's appropriate.  Too, "Apple folks" do not comb through threads looking for posts to delete.  Posts are only deleted when another user reports a violation of the TOU, and it is verified by the Apple moderator.  If you want to post your comments unfettered, you can always host your own website, and vent as you wish.

So, just got my MBP back from GPU chip replacement and using Macs Fan Control, GPU diode is showing around 4-8°C, but my room temp is about 20. Any clues?

This is when system uses integrated graphics.

I really discourage all the people to bring the mbp to apple again. they replace your logic board with a fixed one! don't do that go to a place where they reball it! when i changed the first time my logic board after 90 days it chrashed again and guess why?? because it was a fixed motherboard and not a new one! i found the reballer and he did save my computer. all is clean now i made stress tests a it simply works fine! i have a one year warranty as well while apple gave me only 3 months...and they also lied to me telling me it was a brand new logic board while not, i have seen the guy reballing it and there were already sings of past work in it...so conclusion to all the people wasting their time to an apple store...they take out your logic boards fix them swich with someone elses and give it to you as new making lot lot of money. better spend 1/4 of their charge for a real repair!!
