Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Hi everyone, DO NOT go for logic board replacement. They will give you the REFURBISHED unit, I'm the VICTIM! It's only last for 5 months!

Hello ! Thanks very much ! Would you like to tell me the name or the address of the shop in Akihabara ?

17000JPY is much more reasonable than 40000JPY, but I don't know what's the mean of "can't promise 100% a  successful", is that means once they can't fix this issue, the machine would be totally dead or still in half dead ? Now I'm using the machine in half dead mode with strange screen and no graphics acceleration and the gfxCardStatus doesn't work properly but I can still at least view the text in browser.

Anyway still many thanks ! ありがとうございました、お願いいたします!

Unforturnly that I'm not Japanese, I'm Graphics Programmer working in Tokyo from foreign country. I noticed that compared to the Wintel laptop, less Japanese would buy a MAC because of the software and custom, and maybe also the English is the reason. The Japanese here would always follow the "rules", and maybe the English is also the problem for them to post topic here, so I think once they got problem with the machine, they would directly go to offical shop and pay for the replacement, but to me, there must be another option.

samthing here..almost every model of Apple Laptop...starting form the 2000 Powerbook Pro , first Titanium to 3 aftrewards models of MBP.......so disappointed...so frustrating....

Mine is now 2 i7 with AMD Radeon HD 6490M....and this problem is since end 2011 / beginning 2012...so busy can't even miss my MBP for a week to get analysed....but at the moment can generate the problem at the moment i engage the discrete diplay driver......or freezes, or get blocks ..but most of the time it shows this:

this issue isn't just in US alone.

I'm in Singapore and experiencing the same issue.

I believe there are much much more people affected

    Hi folks,

same exact issues (and pics) on my MBP 15" 2,2 GHz Intel Core i7, Intel HD Graphics 3000, OS X 10.9.2, bought in early 2011-Italy.

So far it has been working well, in the last 2 weeks I'm facing the same issues you share; below there are 2 pics (very similar to abelliveau's ones..), need to force the restart, etc

It's pretty much clear to me that a huge amount of reports on the same issue cannot be a coincidence...tomorrow I'll meet the Genius Bar guys let's see what they say

After logic board replacement, sometimes the MBP can't boot whenever the 'blue' Apple logo appeared. I'm from Malaysia.

The repair center cannot garuantee that your mbp will recover 100% after their reballing (熱修理) because there might also be graphic card's problem itself or reballing might also cause demage to your mbp. Anyway, the man in the repair center seemed to be more familiar with the problem than the Apple genius. My mbp has totally died and cannot even boot. I am also a foreigner here doing graphic work, I also found that Japanese have no courage to break the rules. I cannot imagine a graphic programmer using a broken mbp, hope you good luck. Btw, if you are going to that repair center, you'd better speak a good Japanese or company with Japanese friend. And if you have any new information of mbp repair, pls keep us updated here.

Reflow means melting the solder that attaches the chip to the board hoping that it will fix the bad connection, its also the first step in reballing because it is the only way we can remove the chip from the board so by saying no sane manufacturer would ever attempt to reflow, what other way do you think they refurbish these logic boards ?! when you oppose an openion give us the alternative , not just opposition for the sake of opposition. If they don't reflow then they don't reball either !!!

Well reflow as part of a desoldering is obviously not what people mean when they just talk about reflowing. What is commonly understood by reflowing is to heat up the solder in order to establish an electrical connection instead of removing it. No professional would ever attempt to reflow used parts again in the hope to fix the connection because solder will oxyde and dust and lint will gather under the package causing the result of such an operation to be even worse than before.

Hi Shid3vil, I don't want to discuss with you but don't trust in Apple programme. It's so simple they didn't find a cheap solution till yet and they are trying AMD pays for their mistake. When I suffered the issues, here in this forum, there were 330.000 viewers, right now more than half million. Do you think really that Apple guys are not aware of this matter?. Even if they run a free programme, would you like they use a refurbished logic board in your laptop.? Me neither. After I've done a reballing 1 month ago with a electronic engineer, I don't want Apple guys touch my laptop. The specialized centre were I went, it used lead soldiers, they cleaned the GPU and applied new thermical paste plus the reballing. If you think Apple can do the same, go ahead, but Apple will not use lead soldiers never ever so speak with a specialist and you will know what is better. I had the issues 3 months ago. I sent an email to Tim Cook, signed the action, sent my feedback to Apple, I went to a Genius Bar in Valencia, Spain and I received a Calling from the european headquarter in Irland as well. Everyone very kind but solutions 0. I've got 1 year warranty that's much more than Apple is giving right now. Anyway and honestly,  good luck if you decide to wait Apple's free programme.

After experiemcing many of the symptoms discribed in this thread I dropped off a late 2011 MBP at the apple store to have the logic board replaced at the cost of $500+.  Apple has really disappointed me.

Bodhitawa sad to say but it seems there are very few reballer living in this planet earth...

if there will be one living soul that has reballing skills here in Singapore I will send mine right away.

so until then, i guess i'll have to wait until apple gives a permanent solution.
