Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I have the same problem, paid the amount to have the logic board replaced, now a year and so later, the same problem reoccurs again. Looks like even a new logic board will only last as long as it last, depending on your luck.

Now using my 5 year old Windows PC which is still working without such problem, as I cannot connect my Macbook Pro to an external display anymore as it will crashed straight away.

    Damm it, Apple!!!

Wanted to buy the new mac pro. Now holding it off as I'm worried to face the same issue again and may apple just let you standing there cold unless you pay them an even larger amount of ramsom.

This topic (problem) is why I switched to a Windows PC. I was about to buy the Macbook Pro Retina. I have Macbook Early 2011 but no problems yet.

I don't trust Apple to handle issues anymore. And that's one thing I can't use for a product I use every single day.

BTW, for some people using only their integrated graphics chip works for a while: http://gfx.io/

I have yet to see any problem on a Mac that would force me to Windows

I had enough of Windows when I was working and it was part of the job. With my retirement, I said enough is enough. They even offer to give me my laptop and I decline to accept it.

I have to agree with iceman600.  For those that cannot wait for Apple, reballing is the way to go.

Got mine back after a complete chip replacement, done in Prague, Czech Republic (perunova street). Cost me 120 EUR in total. The computer seems to be working fine. 12 months warranty. I've stress tested the graphics for about 4 hours now and it is stable. Temperature is also within normal limits.

What app did you use to stress test the GPU?

i had the same problems with my mbp 17inch early 2011 model, when stressing the gpu or when it was to cold, than it got worse and was stuck on the gray screen at startup after the spinning wheel

and ofcourse it all started just after the 1 year warrany expired

in the end, before cashing out 500USD i opted to bake the main board in the oven at 390F for 10 mins and now it works like it should

shame on apple for not addressing this 2400USD theft, they are hiding, if Steve would still be around apple would definitely take responsability, and honor their customers, instead they are ironing old products and buying brands like beats trash etc., so much about progress

What is a reball exactly?  Is that where they resolder the same GPU onto the logic board?  That won't help if the GPU has been damaged.

Has anyone tried to have their GPU replaced with a new one?  I saw a few listings on Ebay where you send them your logic board, and they'll replace the GPU for $200.  I'm thinking about doing that, just wondering if anyone else has done it.

    slapple1,

It's really not necessary to replace the GPU - it's the soldering of the GPU that's the issue, not the GPU itself (as in the cases of the 15" mid-2010 GPU problem). If you feel more comfortable with a new GPU, that's your prerogative, but you need not buy a new GPU to solve the problem - just have the GPU reballed.

    Good luck,

    Clinton

    Ryan Connolly,

Apple's not going to do a thing - in order to actually fix the problem, they would have to put four different logic boards back into production and they're simply not going to do that. They will never own up to the production problem and, if they ever do anything, it might be a 10% off coupon for a new machine (but I doubt that they will even do that).

The best thing that you can do is to be pro-active and simply have your GPU reballed. Less expensive than a logic board replacement and actually fixes the problem.

    Seriously not gonna do anything?

What about the iMac recall program that is also using the AMD GPU? I believe something has to be done on apple side.
