Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Oh some dutch movement going on? You can count me in in case you want to start something.

Btw on a side note, my MB pro runs when using integrated only, but unfortunately I use a lot of tools which override the GFXStatus, like just now again.

I got fed up and carefully opened up, and took out the logic board. In complete contradiction with what PS3Specialist said I didnt find a grain of dust, but what I did find was the heat sink screws being rather loose. I could give them 1.5 complete turns with a screwdriver without any force what-so-ever.

After that I put it back together, and turned it on, and of course still the gray screen. But after clearing the nvram it booted up, and it actually didnt crash when it turned to discrete graphics.

The question ofcourse is... How long will it last...

XCylade - which programs override the GFXStatus?  I'm yet to see that. Since getting my machine back with a replaced logic board, I've been keeping careful note of which applications invoke the discrete GPU, shutting them down, forcing Integrated only via GFXCardStatus, and then reopening them. So far, none have overridden and switched to discrete.

Battery life is the least of our worries.

Utilities with the ability to force the use of either the integrated or discrete graphics may not always allow for better battery life and are not recommend by Apple.

    @ Xyclade

Did you replace the thermal paste?

If it is running fine now would really consider doing that.

Get yourself some Arctic Silver CERAMIQUE 2. Apply it sparesly.

Might run a lot cooler and with a bit of luck, who knows how long...

Before I get commented, prefer ceramique 2, as it doesn't dry out like AS5 does.

And if there is a difference at all, it might only be 2c.

Sometimes in favor of AS5, other test the ceramique 2 might be 2c lower.

    Hope it helps you.

Btw, I'm not Dutch, but from the Dutch speaking neighbor country .

DMC440 100% agree with you. I just posted that VERY VERY VERY BRIGHT and CONCERNING idea of Apple.

Apple is so GENIUS and very CARING on their users/consumers.

    sigh...

Got a 3 month warranty which ended about a month ago - assumed the guy knew what he was doing - maybe not! I'm wondering whether he didn't replace the origin chip? Not too sure how it works, how can i make sure I'm getting a good deal next time, and also, can it even be done twice?

I am not holding out hope that Apple will acknowledge this problem.  Does anyone know of a reputable reballer in the in San Francisco Bay Area?   I prefer not to send my laptop out if I can help it.   Thanks for any suggestions!

another victim from italy! apple is not synonymous with reliability but thieves! and the so-called Apple Store technicians are trained monkeys! unfortunately the quality has dropped too much and not worth the trouble to be loyal to a brand that is expensive and does not care about more than the satisfaction of his customers!

for me is the same in italy, i've checked 2 different technical services and they denied the existance of this fault in MBP early 2011. Still when i sent them the links to this topic they stated that's only misfortune of few users. not sure if it's stupidity or censorship.

Another Late 2011 MBP that just started having GPU problems.  The problems just started showing up thursday or friday of this past week when I connect an external monitor (which is my normal operating mode).  Now, using gfxcardstatus, it's verified that it's due to the discrete GPU.  If I force it to integrated only, it runs just fine.  If I leave it in dynamic switching, the screen goes crazy shortly before the machine hangs.  I just installed hardware monitor today, and on one of the crashes since then I saw a temp spike on the GPU (~120 C) just before the crash.  I haven't been running hardware monitor long enough to have good data on that.

    Hey people!

My girlfriends MBP 2011 encountered the same graphical issue as well. Anybody know a reballer in Denmark worth trying? Been calling around asking different mac repair services and they're not exactly very helpful on this issue.

    Thanks!
