Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

They are monitoring the thread heavily and every post is being filtered.

This has been gaining a lot of attention to many media and I believe it will soon reach a stage where someone will just raise this awareness with the commission board.

It's going to be an all out battle consumer vs Apple if this were to happen.

I have exactly the same problem. Getting no local support from Apple whatsoever (Germany).

I'm in the UK and getting exactly the same problem with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15".

Apple ignored my feedback and not getting any support.

    Tufty666,

As you're lucky/unlucky enough to live in the UK even if your warrenty has expired there is still hope.

Under the sales of good act 1979

(2A)For the purposes of this Act, goods are of satisfactory quality if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price (if relevant) and all the other relevant circumstances.

    #

(2B)For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

    #

(a)fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,

    #

    (b)appearance and finish,

    #

    (c)freedom from minor defects,

    #

    (d)safety, and

    #

    (e)durability.

Based on this statement, and the fact that this is clearly not an isolated case but is infact impacting a large number of owners, which inturn implies that this is a design or manufacturing fault that as things stand Apple would appear to be in breach of the Act.

    Details here ...

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1979/54

I've yet to confirm this, but if Apple decline to assist, I believe there are grounds to take this to the small claims court to recover reasonable costs to fix or replace the laptop.

Good luck in getting this resolved!

I am striking out on findings places that do BGA Rework in the SF Bay Area.  Only places I find do reflow.  Found one place that said they can do BGA Rework but prefer to reflow because they have a high failure rate with BGA rework.  Anyone know if that is the nature of BGA rework or more representative if their skill level in this area?  Thinking about sending my laptop off to ps3specialist who has been commenting on this forum.   All of his advise appears very solid.   Have others had good experience with the rework approach?

It is a shame that Apple is not providing an acceptable alternative.  I would gladly pay thier $300 depot fee if they would acknowledge the problem and give some assurance it won't happen with a replacement board at 91 days.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Balling/reballing is a process that requires a high precision that usually can only achieved reliably by (very expensive) machines. Shops offering reball services don't usually have these machines so they're attempting to do it manually which requires a lot of experience and is very tedious work. My recommendation thus is to replace the GPU with a new one instead of attempting to find someone and hoping he or she had the experience and a good day...

I would not trust anyone who claims to be only doing reflows because a proper rework is not reliable enough as they likely just make the problem worse...

Wow, I'd forgotten about the initial loud beep thing when I was writing about my experience.  All of these similarities aren't a coincidence.  It's obvious this is a systematic problem among many of these laptops.  It's time for Apple to figure out what's causing this and issue a recall and replacement program.

I was "lucky" and Apple replaced my logic board just before my extended Applecare expired.  But now I feel like I'm just using a ticking time bomb because they just put in the same faulty board.  This is outrageous.

Most people here would still require a shop to do the GPU replacement.  And then how can you be sure if the shop actually replaces it with a new GPU or just reballs/reflows the old one?

BTW, why isn't there any class action lawsuit about this yet?
