Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

If you're not under warranty, DON'T have Apple replace the logic board

...unless they will do it for free which, as I and others have discovered, is possible, particularly when local consumer laws are mentioned.  It's worth a shot.  But, yes, if parting with cash is required a reball job seems the best option.  Or hanging out for Apple to do the right thing...

Ask for the fix repair price and/or flat repair rate.

Well, some folks did with success the 'bake your own mac' tutorial. It's up to you and your guts. :-)

I would go for the reballing option or apple repair (as i did).

In my case, I pointed out this thread to the 'genius' and also specifically asked for logical board replacement. He agreed with my arguments and offered me this fix repair price of $310, which covers everything in your mbp to get it working. I think that apple should provide this fix for FREE, once it's obvious that was a manufactoring issue.

But Apple insists in close his eyes to this mbp disaster...

    Hope that helps.

Ask for the fix repair price and/or flat repair rate.

That is exclusively available in the US. Please stop assuming that everyone happens to be in the US to take up that special price...

The temperature never reaches 90 degrees. Only when I use handbrake gets to 94C and when I press "start" to convert any video, fans will immediately increase and this should be a good sign of operation. Although I think in any case that the temperature indicated is approximate.

Add me to this list. It happened last week (with all the gray screen or blue with black strips screens and other symptoms). I've found this topic and a quick and cheap reballing fixed the problem for good. I don't even bother going to apple anymore after warranty is over because all they do is switch everything to new pieces and charge a fortune.

I'm using for about a week with the same workload as before (heavy photoshop, games, video rendering, etc). Temperature for those heavy tasks still goes to 90 degress celsius peak but stabilizes at around 80 when fans kick in.

Another thing they did was cleaning the fans, they were dead dirty and this, of course, contributes to high temperatures. You guys should check this as well. It's not the cleaning we do at home opening the bottom case and blowing compressed air: they remove the logic board and clean everthing, they also reapply thermal paste on the chipsets.

Add me to this growing list of late 2011 mbp users. Just started to happen two days ago. Running a regular diagnostic check will pick up nothing but I did find that gfxcardstatus and forcing it to run on the integrated card works. You'd think something this expensive could last for 7 years/end of life cycle. Disappointing.

OK! So, start reading the post!

I was replying to roman@maui question , who mentioned that he IS in US, and asked me how to get that price.

Will Apple ever announce a replacement program for early 2011 mac book pro owners?

My GPU card is gone, there is genius bar here, the apple authorized support partner is asking for 1200 singapore dollars, that's too much :-(

I'm able to boot Command-s mode, will I be able to install Free BSD on to my Macbook Pro? What else can I use my Mac book pro for, say as proxy server etc.,?

Apple will never announce such a thing. There was worst problems in the near past and apple didn't give a ****.

If you computer is out of warranty, why don't you try a non-authorized apple support company? It has been working for me at least.

I have got the same problem in my MacBook Pro 17 Inch Early 2011 AMD GPU HD 6750m

I live in Pakistan but I have sent it to bga_repairs in UK. They removed OLD GPU Chip and installed New GPU chip of same model and name etc with Lead soldering which is more reliable and less prone to cracking. This is why it is still used in Aerospace and Automotive industry for safety.

I am happy with the results so far I hope it stay OK for life time.

It cost me £200 including all shiping etc.

I think spending £200 for new GPU is good choice to make this MacBook Pro to work properly again which cost me £2900 in 2011 since Apple not gonna call for repalcement of these early macbook pros which has manufacturing fault of GPU Chip as soldering was not strong enough in it.

Thanks faryaz - I am in the UK and may have to do the same thing.

I have an Macbook Pro 15 inch Early 2011 AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

My problem started about 4 weeks ago, with the screen messing up and problems booting up. It's very tempremental and sometimes goes a few days working but the screen will mess up and I won't be able to boot up the laptop for a while. I don't have any Applecare, so I think it's probably best to go get it fixed independantly.

It a bit sad that a whole mini industry has popped up on ebay etc based around fixing Apples design faults.

My love for Apple is definitely over.

After getting way too hot and noisy the last couple of months, my MacBook Pro from 2011 crashed for no apparent reason and now it's stuck at the white/blue screen of death. I've attempted all of the things people are screaming on different websites, but it's hopeless.

And the most disappointing thing isn't the fact that my MacBook's broken, but that there's no action or satisfying respons from Apple. They're probably too busy with building that new spaceship in Cupertino.
