Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    D3us,

This seems to be something that you and ps3specialist should solve between yourselves - or just let it go. ps3pecialist, when he advertsied on eBay, got excellent customer reviews so he must be doing something right. When my logic board goes down again (and I'm living on borrowed time, now) I'm going to take advantage of his expertise and positive customer reviews to have him reball my GPU based, if on nothing else, the excellent customer reviews that he recieved on eBay.

    Just let it go...

I only reacted on him saying that video is totally wrong.

While it perfectly shows what reballing is, how its' done or can be done using those tools.

Might be interesting for people curious for the process.

Only asked what's wrong with that vid.

As longs as no one tells me what is, I stick with it beeing very informative giving correct info about the process.

But as I said, other person, other machine, other technique, other workflow, same result.

    I have nothing to solve.

I am not talking about or doubting his work.

Don't know him personnally, haven't seen work from him.

So I can't tell abou that so who am I to doubt him?

I even believe he does a good job on it.

While ps3specialist seems to perfectly know me:

"you know nothing and your experience is zero or below"

Sure I don't know anything about it.

But a fact is, I worked in that industry.

Anyway you're right, better let it go now.

    D3us,

Maybe there are different ways of doing reballing since you worked in the industry? All I know is that ps3specialist got 100% positive ratings from eBay customers, which tells me that his method, however different they may be, work for people who've used his services and I've exchanged a few emails with him and he certainly seems to know what he's doing - he had a bucketload of outstanding reviews, so he must be doing something right.

But this arguing back and forth doesn't make anyone look good and is counter-productive to letting people know how to solve their problems. And he's the only reballer that I've found that offers a one-year warranty. All of which speak well of his method, however they may differ from yours.

If you feel the need to discuss the issue with him, his email address is on his website. But, please, don't bring your differences here.

clintonfrombirmingham,  sorry to respond again, but you are reacting for the wrong reason.

(Also consider that I am not native English speaking, words and feelings might come over differently)

    Read my post again please.

It is not about his service/knowledge/whatever, I didn't/don't even doubt that.

In fact, I do believe he does a very good job on that.

    I am not disputing that.

I was only reacting about his comments to that vid.

The technical, not personal side of it.

Wanted people allready doubting due those comments to know it describes the process perfectly.

Again, if someone explains to me what is wrong with it, I might consider changing my view on it.

Or comment why it's not wrong...

But as no one has yet....

    No hard feelings  to anyone.

    Case closed for me.

    rguerran,

I found the paperwork for the repair I had reluctantly done back in April.  There was a separate sheet that I received when they returned the laptop to me at the store.  I'd be curious to see if anyone else has that paperwork which indicates that they reballed instead of replaced.

Just a small update here. After some weeks with only using the interated card, my macbook pro just freezed completely. No chance to start it anymore. I went to certified apple dealer and he changed the logic board. i called apple again, but same answer: "you macbook is pretty old. over 600 days. out of warranty. there is no problem with the series of early 2011 macbooks" so I paid 700 euro to be able to work again. thank you apple!

That's what really makes me angry. They're trying to convince people that a computer now only has to last 2 years. It absolutely crazy! How can you accept that for a high-end laptop? If this is their new standard, expensive short-lived computers, I'm out.
