Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

That's what really makes me angry. They're trying to convince people that a computer now only has to last 2 years. It absolutely crazy! How can you accept that for a high-end laptop? If this is their new standard, expensive short-lived computers, I'm out.

Exactly. A high end laptop should have at least 5 years of life, if not even more.

I have crappy VAIO laptops that are more than 10 years old and are still working.

    Warm HELLO to everyone here!

I'm an IT engineer (20 years in business)...

I’ve been reading this forum for quite a while as exactly the same thing happened to my client’s macbook 2011 and also to my personal one

(with I treated like my baby) which has the highest specs (Core i7, 2.3GHz 8MB cache and HiRes matte display)

All I can see here on this forum is the sad fact of Apple ignorance...

They have become as greedy as any other corporation in this world... When Jobs was still alive and in charge, they were the only IT corporation that I liked, but since Jobs died they are blind and all they can see is dollars on their accounts, nothing more....

I think that the only solution that we can show, as a “thank you” for their behaviour, is ANARCHY!

This is our hard earned money spent on quite expensive products.

Don't be shy - it's your money after all!!!

    Take care people,

    Peace!

    Artur

This will make or break my Apple purchasing choices.

Currently I have a MBP/iPhone and iPad and recommend Apple to friends and family.

However. If Apple dont hold their hands up and DO THE RIGHT thing all these items are due or require changing soon anyway.

MacBook Pro is so unreliable and even the smallest amount of GPU processing power crashes it at times. I loved moving from Windows to OSX but OSX isnt perfect and if I have to move back to Windows and a brand spanking customisable Lenovo Laptop I will.

iPhone 5 is due an Upgrade possibly time to move to Samsung.

iPad will do for now but doubtful I would have purchased one if I wasnt so invested in Apple App store and compatibility with the MBP and iPhone. A new tablet with USB ports, HDMI ports and expandable memory would all improve on my iPad with an Operating system which isnt so locked down to user customisation.

Apple really do feel like they are alienating me lately.

Spending roughly £2300 on a machine which lasts 2 a bit years is pathetic, my last Laptop which I upgraded from to this MBP is still working fine for a family member!

I'm exactly in the same boat. My 2007 MBP is still working and used by a family member. I spend even more money for my 2011 MBP top of the line, and it dies after less than 2 years.

Nogi, as you give pric in GBP, you probably live in the UK?

You might be entitled to a warranty repair.

    http://whatconsumer.co.uk/faulty-laptop-rights/

Think there is also an option to let it diagnose by an independent 3th party.

Cost about 75gbp, which you don't have to pay for if it is diagnosed as manufacturers problem.

Don't live in the UK, can't tell you more.

There heve been people in this forum in the same boat as you (if UK) having it fixed for free under that  Sale of Goods Act.

Maybe talk to a higher rep? Print out some documents etc...?

D3us thank you very much for this information, you are right to assume I am a UK customer.

To be honest I havent even taken my MBP in to an Apple store and tried yet as its out of Warranty and the general response and mass of users here stuck between a rock and a hard place with no help from Apple other than to pay for a new logic board has put me off making the 30 mile trip to my nearest Apple Store.

Is it worth the fuel to drive that far to be told to pay up? I dont know but it might be with your infomation to hand so thanks again.

I do intend to print this thread in FULL at work tomorrow and take it with me lol.

    Hi

Couple of things about your post Nogi,

If your MBP is under two years old ( from purchase time and was purchaced in the EU ) the EU Warrenty cover can be invoked.

The timinig seems a bit off, The mid 2011 MBPro was updated in 2012, I think, with cooler graphics chip. If your machine is two years from new and the fault happened recently it may not be the same things as described in thread or the same machine type. If it failed before 2 years old but was unreported at the time you may have to show that the failure happen inside the two year window.

Finally as well as what D3US said if you bought the laptop on a Credit card check out a possible Section 75 claim.

It won't fix it's self.  Let us know how it shakes out.

Yup - exactly the same here - 6 year old Dell still going strong for my wife.My Mac book Pro a huge disappointment due to this logic board issue and I've had 2 iphone 5s brick on me in the last 6 months too. Apple - you look lovely but I am not in business of buying expensive pretty bricks.

Honestly Apple - nearly 400 pages on this thread and your "geniuses" still say it's just the internet and proves nothing. Big LOL!
