Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Your words are like MAGIC! Hope it gets through to Tim. I hope Google takes over the world, they seem to be one of the few companies that cares about humanity.

What you say is true, Clive. I also stopped blindly recommending Apple hardware.

But the “reverse halo” effect will be faster if more people know about Apple’s silence on this problem. And maybe that worries them enough to search for a solution to our (for now) MacBricks.

Er. Google caring about humanity? Rubbish. They just want to sell you adverts.

All large companies care about are profit margins and shareholder returns. The point is that Apple will get hurt in the long run by their failure to stand behind their products. You can only demand a premium price for a commodity product if you offer something to differentiate yourself.

Apple used to be able to offer a more reliable OS and more reliable hardware. iOS and Mac OS are still very nice, but not that much superior to more recent Windows and Android. If they can't offer better and more reliable hardware, why should anyone buy Apple products?

I lost my faith on apple products. Android phones are superior to iPhones and android tablets is also better. My MacBook Pro gpu failure made think about buying surface pro 3. I am not gonna spend huge amount of money buying MacBook pros that will fail two years later. I am not fan of no brands but MacBook Pro is my number one I use for work or pleasure.

Bad word spreads faster than good.

Old customer cheaper to keep than new customer.

    God Apple are stupid.

Failing the basic rules of sales and customer service.

I have lost my faith too. Wont buy another apple again.

No more ipods, iphones, ipads, laptops or computers from them.

Once reballed begrudgingly, the moment it goes pc all the way.

Apple products are crap. 2 year lifespan. Look at the iphone. 2 year contract then new, then tied into another 2 yer contract then new. If it breaks after two years start a new contract with the super new iphone that is some much better than before.

He then explains to me that I went in with the wrong mindset?  that all laptops usually breaks within 3 years?  and I've only had mine for 2.

I'd love to hear them start putting this in their ads. Or at least start telling potential buyers the same thing. SUch BS!

.  Also I asked apple-care "what would you do if your in my position and he said "I would buy a new macbook pro"! What kind of help is this!

Yea right! Because we all know apple care employees have an extra $2000 laying around... Just like all of us do right?

MacBook Pro late 2011 15'' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with the discrete graphic card issue (AMD Radeon HD 6770M).

I will definitely not buy a Mac/iOs device anymore unless Apple adopts a decent attitude.. I still need to bring my laptop to service and see what they tell me.. To be continued…

My 2011 MacBook Pro died. The thing used to get heated up and then freeze to split screen, grey screen, or just play dead. After grace period of around 2 hours, when powered on, it would act normal. Then again die after 2 hour. Its, all lost after 2 days. Can someone help identify the problem. Perhpas, also hint me about solutions as well.

After a week of working well (and the Genius' unable to reproduce) it started to crash again last night. Happened again this morning and I took a few pictures. I scheduled a Genius appt for Friday am - I hope that I can reliably reproduce it by then or have them test it and reproduce - it has to occur with them watching.

Bought an used Macbook 2011 last year in April.

After one year, some weeks ago, the same problems occured as they are being discussed here. Shifted screen layout, hanging during startup with a grey screen. When rebooting the unit, while it is still "hot", there are small fine red lines in the grey screen and it won't make it to the logon screen.

What is this? I bought Apple hardware because I had been told that it "just works"  - but it isn't true. I had some other notebooks from Toshiba and Lenovo and they are still working after all these years (the oldtimer is more than 10years old!).

I won't afford a new MacBook for sure for thousands of dollar. It's all the same crap which can happen with products from other manufacturers. But they won't charge you a fortune for a notebook which dies after 2-3 years and costs another fortune to repair it.

Can't get in contact with Apple support to let them know that the problem exist. But I can't without buying a support ticket for 50$ - what kind of support is this? It's b*u*l*l*s*h*i*t, after all.

Can anyone provide a free support email address?

    Thank you in advance.

After this "Great Experience" I consider switching back  to Windows. For the price which I have paid for the used MacBook (2 years old) I can get a top-state-of-the-art Toshiba notebook as well. Which doesn't die after one year usage.

Man, I'm really glad that I didn't switched over to Video editing using Final Cut! That would be totally useless now!

    Addendum:

Macbook is usable with internal display, as long as it stays cool (installed smc fancontrol, running default by 3000rpm). Connecting an external displays crashes the Book imediately, freezing the system.

I got my MacBook Pro in July 2011 and one month in it keeps over heating and crashing so I took to the apple store and replace the LB and its fine until the screen start going black in 2014  and on Memorial Day I was mirroring with Apple TV and it start over heating I shut it down and when I start it up back my screen is divided in two with a  vertical  line and whats the sense to fix it if it going to happen again they need to do a recall.
