Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Kindly ignore the google doc link, that was the inaproproate link that was blocked by admin.

lets help together and spread the feedback link suggested by apple to reach the concern team.

Goodluck Team and claim the victory! The truth shall set us free! God bless to all!

    Please could someone advise:

Currys I think will replace or repair MBP for free thanks to consumer rights (sales act). That is after I get confirmation from Apple of what the problem is and why it happened - so I have an Apple appointment for tomorrow morning.

Is it worth taking advantage of this or waiting to see if and what Apple do?

I would take advantage of it. Who knows when (or if) apple will act on this.

Pretty useless attempt on apple part. If the issue is as big as I think, they will achknownledge it eventually. Remember the overheating issue with Xbox 360 and they did a recall later on even if they never admitted there was a problem?

Contacting Apple via the MacBook Pro feedback form has been recommended since the early days of these very long threads - hundreds of people have said they've done it.  It's good to continue doing it, but I am not convinced that feedback alone is going to be the tipping point that gets attention.  Even with hundreds of reports, we've still heard about various Apple reps all the way up to Tim Cook's office saying that they haven't heard about this issue before.  So I firmly believe that you fill out the feedback form.

    Hi,

This is my first time posting here so please bear with me.

I'm from India, and have an early 2011 15" MBP, and less than two months ago the startup screen would show vertical grey lines and refuse to boot. In the safe mode, it booted but the graphics were distorted. I took it in, they mentioned a MLB replacement, and I went for it (not on AppleCare, so paid for it). Today, barely a month later, the same issue popped up. Just before that, my screen flickered and went to the infamous deep blue screen with black vertical lines. I gave it again just an hour ago, as it was under the 90 day service warranty.

I was in disbelief thinking I had extremely bad luck, but am quite taken aback to see that this is a widespread problem. I have no clue if I have to be happy that there could be a chance that Apple recognises the problem, or nervous because I can expect it to crash again even after the second replacement!

    I'm worried abvout two things,

---> I've given my MBP to have the MLB replaced again, could I expect the same problem to occur yet again or would it be fixed atleast now?

---> What are the chances that Apple will acknowledge this soon?!

Again, this is my first time posting in the community so bear with me.

Sadly there's quite a few posts in these forums of the issue re-occuring after the logic board was replaced. One assumption is that Apple is using factory refurbished boards that were replaced for this exact same reason. And since diagnostics don't show the GPU error the boards are just circulated back.

What some people suggest is running your laptop hard once you get it back, trying to make it fault within the 90 days. This could backfire on you and the laptop faults at 100 days... it's a tricky situation.

I'm holding out on paying for a replacement untill Apple does acknowledge there's a common fault and some form of re-engineering is performed on the logic board as I'm wary that any replacement will just result in the same issues and multiple payments for repairs.

Although if they did offer up an extended repair I'd be there in a flash even if the solution was just a logicboard swap. When/if that will happen... who knows. It seems our issues haven't reached "critical mass" yet...

I Just spoke to a senior advisor on chat who guaranteed me this problem and forum would be promoted and taken note of, and taken very seriously.

whilst Currys may swap mine for free, I want to make sure we all get justice and notice from Apple.

I would do it but I am studying aboard.

Looks like this unacknowledged manufacturing/design defect is just starting to show itself in the sea of customers who purchased these MacBook Pros. Here are the details of my failing AMD GPU...

Apple ID (If you can provide): oneom

MacBook Model: MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)

    Serial Number: C02G40UKDRJN

    Case Number: R103010523

    Country or Region: USA

Details: After 2 years with zero problems, I observed a video anomaly after plugging in an external monitor for extended desktop. Shortly after it froze. I somehow got it to reboot, took it into the apple store. They said they didn’t know what the problem was, tested memory, said they could send it out for repair at $310 flat rate. I told them I want to be sure about what’s causing the problem before I agree to pay, so I took it home. Extensive troubleshooting combined with online research, finally led me to understand that the problem is with the AMD processor, and that it is degenerative (ie; it keeps getting worse over time). Currently I can run the machine just fine, as long as I don’t run an app or perform a function which causes the GPU to switch from Intel to AMD; as it is certain to freeze when the switch is made, or shortly thereafter. Sometimes the AMD GPU works for a limited period of time ––it seems that when a certain threshold of shared memory in reserve for graphics is met, bam! Corruption and freeze. Bummer because the AMD is the EFI boot device, so it wants to white screen at restart after a freeze occurs. I have to trick it by first restarting and clearing PRAM, then plugging in the MacBook Pro, then booting in to Recovery, which it does. Then while in Recovery screen, UNPLUG the power cord –which signals lower energy consumption and thus means a higher threshold before AMD will be switched-to, then reboot from Recovery mode while still unplugged. That clears the reserved memory back to default, apparently. Anyway, I can’t use most of the apps that I require for it to be useful. I would like Apple to acknowledge the defect and help us –their loyal customers– at the very least, get into a newer, dependable model at little or discounted cost. I am hesitant to pay for repair when they will not only be replacing my logic board with an identically defective part, but chances are the part will be a “factory reconditioned” part –meaning not brand new –meaning LESS than 2 years of use left. COME ON APPLE, PLEASE TAKE CARE OF US. WE ARE YOUR GREATEST ADVOCATES, NOT YOU’RE ADVERSARIES. MAKE A GESTURE, AND I ASSURE YOU IT WILL GO FAR. MAKE STEVE PROUD –REST HIS SOUL.
