Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hey everyone,

Same issue with my early 2011 macbook. Menu bar was completely black last week so I cold rebooted and ignored it. Today, I cannot boot up whatsoever.

When I attempt to boot, I reach the blank white screen below:

When I attempt to boot into recovery mode I get a blue screen (sometimes w/ thin black lines):

Do you think this is also a GPU problem?  If so, what is the best fix? I hear talk of reballing the GPU to replacing the logic board.

Has anyone here had their logic board replaced by Apple and not run into problems immediately afterwards?

Sorry for the numerous questions. This really suks. I can't believe Apple is going to let this issue slide.

    Hi Jmc53,

I can confirm with you, it's the same issue we are having now. Please do not pay Apple by replacement of any 'NEW' logic board for you, you might have same again weeks or months after.

    Hey Calvinogood,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I won't be paying Apple another dime!

Is there a way to actually reach OSX, install gfx card status, and disable the discrete card?

I can't get past the white/blue screen and crazy fans spinning on startup...

Same issue just hit my laptop today. Less than 60 days out of warranty...

Apple needs to step up and fix this issue.

I ahve had this issue since Dec 13. I am now really upset because this is the third GPU crash in 6 months. Apple Care has replaced the logic board 2 times (Dec 2013, May 2014). Apple you need to deal with this, now! I have 3 deadlines this week alone and this is interfering with my work. IMG_20140617_225848_221.jpg

I have exactly the same thing and I have had the logic board replaced twice in the past six months.

I feel you... the day my MBP died I spent 2 days configuring my new desktop computer and moving files to be able to work. Of course then I had some very long days to be able to catch up with my deadlines.

Actually no, if you can't get into OSX you can't install gfxCardStatus.

BTW, gfxCardStatus does not disable the discrete card, it only tells programs to not use it. If you reboot your computer or connect an external monitor it will still use the discrete card.

If you manage to get into OSX, some people in this thread have claimed you can hack some kexts to disable it for good.

Guys, I'm personally getting sick and tired of monitoring this thread. It feels like we're going nowhere especially when I saw the WWDC. It's clear that apple is shifting to consumer market more and more. My MBP 17 early 2011 is up and running after 3rd logicboard replacement. If it happens to breakdown again. I'm thinking of abandoning the apple platform even if I really don't like the idea of going back to windows. The next best thing that I can see is to switch to linuxbut I'm an adobe user and for those of you who loves linux and wants adobe to create a linux version of their suite please check this out ********

Yes you can, I had the same problem.

    1. Let your macbook complete its failed bootup complete with whirring fans (when you have white screen).

    2. Go through boot login procedure blindly

    3. Wait appropriate time for login to complete

    4. Remove power adapter cable (this steps seems to force computer to default to integrated graphics)

    5. Hold down power button for five seconds to force power off.

    6. Press power button and reboot normally on integrated graphics.

After that you can download and install gfxcardstatus. I've also removed my kext amd drivers from the usr/system/lib folder in this way it's not going to the discrete at all. I've been using after effects and photoshop on the integrated graphics now, it's runs a lot slower but a least i can work.

Hope this will work for you.

Model: Macbook pro 15" 2.4 Core I7 8GB. (Late 2011, bought in Italy in January 2012)

    Serial Number: C02GP2K1DV7M

    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)

Apple Service proposed the Logic Board replacement at my expense which is an unacceptable solution in my opinion.

I removed the AMD files from their location and this allows you to boot your machine and to use it (with certain limitations).

After that, you can try a normal reboot once you've installed gfxCardStatus and eventually smcFanControl so if you manage to login you can immediately switch to the Intel GPU immediately and set the fans speed to a higher rate (4000rpm).

I am not a technician and I simply recompiled a bit of all the information that's around and so far it's working for me.

At this point, it's frankly pathetic to have to find solutions by ourselves. Thank you Apple. And bye bye…

Guys, tomorrow is the opening day of Madrid's Store. It is one of the biggest in Europe and suppose to be an "iconical" store. Lot of media is going to be there tomorrow. I live in Seville, so it is trully, but if there is a big group of people who wants to make noise, I would love to join them. Just 20 people right there holding our "bluemacscreen" macbooks is enough I guess, to have the attention of some media, mainly technology blogs. It is just an idea. Anyone?

That's a great idea, I hope people will join you. (I'm not in Europe).
