Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Update:

    23 Jun.

In the past week i managed to get another Mac.. (my first iMac actually) from ebay (late 2009, 21.5 £284 Delivered )… very pleased, and relieved to have rescued my data before having my MBP shipped off.

fast forward to today, and i just called apple care, they did the usual tests on booting up the machine with me over the phone. As you would expect, no dice. it would boot to blue screen with dark vertical lines and run hot.

they are having it picked up on wednesday to be repaired and then delivered back to me. (I have Apple Care)

we'll see how this goes.. i hope with Apple Care the logic board is brand new and not refurbished. Either way, if this issue happens again and again i will be taking it to the apple store, and demand a new macbook.

i also took HQ DSLR photos of my laptop's condition.. as it is truly immaculate and i made that clear with the AC representative on the phone, he encouraged me to take pictures and not to worry - but if i do received it back with damage or a scratch, to simply follow it up with my case and it will get taken care of.

better quality picture of the issue:

The reball didnt work the first time. After the first repair I took it home, reinstalled my hard drive, did some testing and it was having the same problems. I contact Khaled and told him what was going on . He said to replaced the GPU with a new one and that would most likely fix the problem. It worked. I should have just replaced the GPU from the beginning since it was so cheap!

Hey Topmannn, what GPU did you get and where did you bought it? Is it possible to install a better GPU for the early 2011 15"?

This error occurs when this quality product on very often. I think a repair is not helpful. The error is coming back. I know that already from Samsung notebooks. My MBP 15 "held just 2.5 years. I throw it away and just leave it with the Apple notebooks. Lot of money for a machined aluminum housing. Buying you a Lenovo notebook ^

Just wanted to add another positive review for PS3SPECIALIST...

I had my GPU reballed and it's working great! I was worried it would take a while, but he shipped it back out on the 4th business day after receiving it.  I hesitated for a few months about doing it...I wish I had done it earlier.  If you're on the fence, do it!

So, I'm back in the boat with you guys.

I had my GPU reballed in OCT 2013 issues again in less than 2 months.

I got replaced with new GPU at beginning of MAY 2014 and problems came back this morning. Now I doubt, that I got new chip... (http://mj-computer.eu)

Waiting for an answer from the shop that I got GPU replaced...

    I'm of the newly afflicted.

    • Early 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) with 16GB RAM.
    • Intel HD Graphics 3000 w 512MBvram
    • AM??D Radeon HD6490M w 246MBvram

There were no warning signs that anything was going wrong. After a day at the office, I came home and took it out of my bag and when I turned it on, it would go from start-> rotating progress wheel-> blue vertical pinstripes.

Sadly, I'm a couple hours away from an Apple Store...so it's going to be awhile before I can take it in.

In the mean time, I had hoped I could find a linux live CD that would default to the Intel graphics, but I've tried a bunch of distros and none of them displays anything on the monitor. No boot sequence, nothing.  Anyone with this problem manage to get a LiveCD to work? If so, which one?  I've tried Ubuntu 14.04, Lubuntu 14.04, the latest ElementaryOS, etc...

Just joined the club a few days ago. I am in Canada so we don't get the flat rate repair that the US folks do. I was quoted $502.55 for logic board and $39 for labour to replace the logic board, plus taxes on top. Can any Canadian chime in if other alternatives are there to get Apple to replace the logic board in less than that amount? I am obviously out of warranty. I've owned my early 2011 17" for exactly three years and now I am getting by with a mini.

I must sound like ranting. It's frustrating as the Genius says there is no guarantee beyond the 90 warranty. So I can potentially throw another $600 at the Macbook and still owning a piece of heavy metal at the end.

So $502.55 + $39 is the cheapest way to get this fixed in Canada?

Forget Apple. Just send it to the states and get it reballed by someone. That's what I'm doing.

I have an early macbook pro 15" which is also having the same issues with the rest of the people here.

Have been lurking with the thread for quite some time now and have been very frustrated that Apple haven't done anything for its consumers with regards with the issue. Now i'm using a lenovo thinkpad same age as my mbp which I have been using more often which up until works perfectly fine?.. A $400 machine which lives longer vs a $2500 machine which is already dead after 3years of use? Doesn't make sense at all shouldn't it be more premium and should have a better technology?.

I just might try and look for someone here in the Philippines who does reballing or like what other suggest a graphic replacement.

Hey sublimal08, I know exactly how you feel.. I am in the same boat and I'm in the Philippines too. Please let me know if you find a service, because all I've been able to find so far is reflowing services, not reballing. And i definitely don't want a reflow. I want reball too.

Last resort is for me to send it to ps3specialist, but international shipping will cost a lot and I'm not sure how our customs will process it when it is sent back here.

    Philippines here too!

I emailed Tim C. and got a free logic board replacement, all expenses paid by Apple. Repaired it at PowerMac Center, Greenbelt, Makati. Now the issue is back and needs to have the logic board replaced again.
