Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hey benedictros, Philippines here too!

I emailed Tim C. and got a free logic board replacement, all expenses paid by Apple. Repaired it at PowerMac Center, Greenbelt, Makati. Now the issue is back and needs to have the logic board replaced again.

    rrider-

I just got the original GPU the laptop came with. I dont think it would work getting a different chip. The other components on the board were designed to work with that one chip. I doubt it would work. Its not the same as changing a video card in a desktop comp. PS3specialist order the GPU for me off ebay. Took a week or so.

Same problem here. Macbook Pro 13', early 2011. At first sometimes the trackpad and keyboard would freeze, then the screen froze with random colors. I got three beeps when tried to restart, but now I only have black screen, fan working on full speed, and no response whatsoever.

Just like many folks here, my macbook pro 8,2 (15" early 2011) has become a $3k brick, same symptoms, corrupted graphic, system hang, restore reinstall both fail, completely unusable. I have sent it in for expanded battery repair during my last 2nd month of apple warranty, it worked a month then now I am out of warranty.

I stumble upon this thread while researching my problem and man, I ain't the only one, 674k views, 6k responds, 425 pages of replies, took me 10 min to get to last page and surprisingly no recall by apple yet...

i'm try getting it repair at genius bar later this week, but I am afraid logic board replacement out of my pocket is my only option and no guarantee it will last.

Having bought two top of the line 27" iMac with apple care recently, I will see if my corporate account with apple will treat their loyal customer differently.

The 13" models didn't have a discrete GPU so I suspect you may have a different problem.

Actually some did (2009 models had an nVidia 9400M) but that was all they had.

Strange - I just noticed I no longer get email updates about new messages - June 18 was the last mail I got.  I have found this thread again though I find the behaviour a bit odd - looks like the discussion has been branched to a new thread?  Lets see if I get a notification for this one...

After the forum maintenance the other day I have also been experiencing weird behavior on this thread. Not as many posts anymore and it seems some stuff is being edited/deleted before announcements come.
