Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I don't think that the 16GB of ram is the main cause of our problem with GPU, even then My MBP currently uses 8GB and it isn't working properly (only the integrated graphic card is working).

Actually those of us who make a living using computers are KO'ing all Apple products even though they were the products of choice when Apple really did care. We have to pay our bills and eat too. This isn't a small issue this is a global issue. All we want is the same thing our own customers would want, that they stand behind their products and make it right.

I can tell you straight up musicians on tour do not use Apple products period because of too many issues. Studios, managers, press agents, publicist, public relations, media, photo journalist, geeks, photographers (post production) do use Apple.... well many now use Windows.

If I have a band in Asia and they can't reach me, the one holding down the fort in the US then guess who is getting screamed at? If I can't post stuff like pre-sale tickets and the fans have to pay full price because my machines are down (dead) and the fans take it out on the bands/artists guess who the bands/artists take it out on? Me. If I can't stream a live show in another country because my machine is dead guess who gets cussed out?

I was simply responding to Hal's list that I followed for 3 years and then some to no avail. If it sounds depressing then try living it.

Just tried to call my local Apple Support (Denmark) and they couldn't find anything in their system on these errors, but he would take the matter further up the organization (I have to believe that).

He said, that the more who will call them to report this issue, the more attention will be brought to the issue.

A month ago I reported a successful reballing here, but last week it broke again and I had it reballed again. (interestingly enough, I was also running windows 7 on bootcamp when it broke for the second time. first time a game, second time just a browser opened with a flash video player)

It's working but now I'm completely insecure about running games, converting videos or encrypting files. As soon as any of those tasks start, temperature jumps to 90° C (194° F). And an expensive computer such as this one just to simple tasks is a complete waste of money.

I'm sure this thing will break again sooner or later and in the end I'll have to replace the motherboard, and it will probably last a few years until it breaks too.

I have problems with the graphics card for the MBP 2011 too. On both my private laptop and my work laptop.

I think it is extremely rotten of apple to not acknowledge this problem. Instead I have to pay even more to replace my logic boards. The apple store does not help me, because apparently I am the only one with this problem and no exchange program exists.

One laptop gets pink stripes all over the screen, the other gets kernel panic and reboots with an error message related to the graphics card drivers.

I am seriously considering abandon mac now. I don't see that I have an other choice.

    Hello,

I have the same problem with MBP 2011. When I went to the technical support in my city (Granada-Spain) I found four computer more with the same problem. They are checking my mbp right now. However they said me that the test were ok in the others computers, so they cannot do anything (and if they find something wrong, I have to pay by myself). I have called to apple care and they said me that if the test is ok, or if there is some problem in the logic board, they cannot do anything.

it's so sad that Apple doesn't care our problem. We should enter a collective complaint. I have signed the petition in chage.org but we have to design an directly action against Apple.

I am professional freelance designer and teacher who chose Mac because of its stability. If Apple doesn't take care of us, I will abandon mac, and I will never recommend to my students and colleagues to buy Apple's devices.

How do I re enable the discrete GPU. I disabled it using the Single User Mode So I could boot.

I have to re enble it because apple care tech told me it has to be in an unaltered condition to be accepted for warranty repairs

Just to add one more to the list.

    Crashes immediately with Discrete card.

Started at the end of my applecare but I didn't realize what was going on till it was past my date.

I'm going to make an appointment next week.

2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card Issue, easy to find, and to re enable the gpu, suppose you do the "move the files" way, so just do it in reverse, get back the files and do the touch command

Apple already knows about this and has done nothing. This issue had been "feed-backed" to Apple, written about in the press, whined about by thousands of consumers online, and I'm sure Apple and Cook have received plenty of notations about the issue.

Perhaps Apple could make the case for ignorance regarding the first batch of 2011 MacBook Pros, but I suspect that there’s evidence to the fact that this issue was present pre-production, i.e. Apple knew then that its 2011 MacBook Pros had a higher probability of serious GPU related hardware failures and computing interruptions than acceptable for the quality and value advertised by Apple and portrayed by the price of the 2011 MacBook Pros.

If it didn’t know then, it knew by the end of, if not mid-2011 about the issue, and its continued marketing and sale of these defective laptops, without notifying consumers, potential consumers, the market and/or general public means it knowingly and willingly mislead consumers about, and misrepresented the quality and value (or lack their of) of the 2011 MacBook Pros.

Apple advertised that these 2011 MacBook Pros could utilize the highly marketed advanced functions of two versions of OS (Snow Leopard and Lion), both of which install/include GPU intensive programs. It also promoted and portrayed that these MacBook Pros would be able to withstand other GPU intensive non-Apple programs in the advertisements for these MacBook Pros.

This is, however, false as we all can attest to: overheating, screen glitches, freezes, kernel panics, shutdowns, failures to boot/during startup, are all evidence to the fact that the entire construction of the 2011 MacBook Pros cannot withstand the deficiencies of their included GPU hardware, that these deficiencies seriously limit the operability, quality and value, and permanence of the 2011 MacBook Pros. That these issues begin early into the usage of the machine during normal as-advertised acceptable usage and wear of the machine and thus are evidence to an obvious and critical flaw of the parts and manufacture of the machine, and thus decreases the quality and value of the machine, and thus these MacBook Pros are overpriced lemons, ticking time-bomb booby traps and Apple knew it.

"a product must be free of defect for 6 years"

That's not true.  You misunderstand the law.
