Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I was called by an Apple 'salesman' yesterday because I sent an email regarding this matter to Tim Cook. Long story short: tech guys are looking into it, repairs will be billable, no comment on if there will be a replacement.

I've got my MBP running again with gfxcardstatus 2.2.1 forcing integrated graphics, but I'm not gonna use it on stage anymore. I'm a prosumer in the music industry and if Apple doesn't fix/replace this issue in the near future this has been my last mac. A pro laptop with a super-pro price that doesn't last longer than 3 years? I'll pass.

Altho, what's the alternative? I fear going back to Microsoft!!!

Now I am in the situation where my MBP it will be just 4y.o. in August and since upgrading to ML all went crazy with the graphic chip, crashes etc and I have been asked £500 to change the entire motherboard on a laptop that is now worth it exactly £500.

So I am stuck in a situation here...I NEED a laptop but I cannot sell mine cause it's faulty and I don't have enough money to buy a full price one...who shall I be angry at??? Frustration is almost causing my hair to go grey...

I have no way out and Apple isn't taking their responsabilities on a problem that was a factory problem!! Their product aren't cheap but their customer service IS!! no regard for any of us that chose their machines, now...even to just SPEAK via phone or chat about my problem I have to pay a single report of £35....is this service???? On a machine I paid £1500????

Very very very disappointed with this company!!!!

    Count me in...

Discrete GPU crashes a few seconds after it's been switched on.

Running with gfxCardStatus for now but considering a GPU replacement + reballing

    Any experience with bga_repairs?

    Thanks

    Hi,

One more dead GPU here. Starting by a reboot, then some graphic glitch and then nothing .... finally succeed to reboot and force the integrated intel card with gfxcard 2.2.1.

Did contact Apple by chat, but just get advised to bring it to repair, at my own cost of course. As a lot of people here, it's my tool to work, it's really frustrating when you spent somehow one month salary to buy it. For information I have a Hi-Res screen anti-glare ... must have incidence, I read there some people also had this screen, maybe more stressful for the GPU.

Thanks for removing my post because I talk about a petition ... well it has been say before so ...

bga_repairs did a reballing for me about 6 weeks ago. Quick turnaround, works fine. How long it will last, who knows? But that's also true of a "replacement" logic board as it will not be a new part...

    WOW!!! is that true???

can bga actually repair this problem??? I was told that because on my model (MacBookPro6.2 15" mid 2010) the graphic chip is integrated on the MB it want possible to repair unless I changed the whole MB....but seems those guys can do it?!

    Atheryl.

I understand your frustration but Petitions are against the TOU for the site, and as you have signed them it was very likely that it would be removed.

Thanks, How long did it take and how much did you pay? It's probably cheaper and more efficient than a logic board replacement (which will have the exact same problem at some point)

Search on google for GPU or GBA reballing and macbook there are a lot of people that provide the service. Maybe you can find some close to you. I'm also going to do a rebal soon.

@Quoob I did let my mac try to start on the gray screen (you can hear fan) and let it take heat ... something like 10 minutes, then ... try to put some little pressure on area near by w/e/d keys ... maybe did nothing maybe did.

At the same time I also tried to login blindly as someone suggested, so after the 10 minutes I tried type my password, disconnect the power plug then hard shutdown.

This made me able to boot the repair utility, mount a hard drive and clone my main HD. Then nothing to loose, I tried to boot on system. It did worked (I got a quick glitch but still enough to go download gfx, start it, and force integrated GPU)

I would suggest you to prepare a USB key with the software already on, just in case. Maybe it's possible to install on command line ?!

    Don't forget, 2.2.1 only !
