Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Had this problem too!!!

I send an email to Tim Cook, and got a call from a product manager in Singapore.

Nothing was changed. He told me to wait the response from Aplple headquarter in US.

Hope Apple do somthing to fix this.

How long did it take for them to call you after you sent the email?

So just like everyone else I'm having the same problem. First time I took my MBP into the Apple store they told me it was a corrupted system file and wiped my computer and did a reinstall, I explained to them then and there in store what the issue actually was with the GPU but they just shrugged it off and denied any knowledge of it. I spoke to Customer Relations also and they said they wouldn't do anything for me and I had to pay.

I live in Australia and we have some pretty decent consumer laws that cover us with products even if they are passed the actually warranty period as long as we can prove the product is not of quality and that you wouldn't have bought it if you had known about the issue. So I lodged a complaint against Apple with the Consumer Law Government Department in Australia, still waiting to hear back from them.

I got a phone call within 48 ours from a customer service representative, their legal team is looking to my claims of consumer law. In the meantime I did troubleshooting over the phone, next step they have booked me in at an apple store for an assessment of my MBP and  have waived the fee associated. Once they look at it and find the issue they will work out what they are going to do for me and contact me back.

My point is we need to be contacting the important people that matter in the company. This issue needs to be raised with people that have more power than us.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

I am really starting to doubt that there will ever be any replacement program on this issue.

About a month ago they did this: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program

Same manufacturer (AMD) and the model number is also very close to ours so it seems that it's a series of issues with AMD GPUs of that period of time.

I have been told that it's easier to repair it on iMac as the GPU is not stuck to the logic board. Maybe thats why Apple is dragging this out.

Actually, hoping that mine will fail immediately when I get it back from repair. Then they will replace it (FYI, I went through my insurance with the problem and not through Apple).

I think I'm going to send mine out to get the "reballing," as well.

The iMac replacement program has been around for some time now...they must have made some updates to it recently.

2 weeks ago, my mac screen froze. What do you think it's the best alternative?

    1. Sell the parts?
    2. Install ubuntu?
    3. Find creative ways to destroy the computer?
    4. Wait for a solution from apple?

I don't live in USA, so I think reballing is not a real option for me.

Perhaps the aforementioned could do the reball if you just send him your logic board. He did this w/ ps3(s), however had other ps3 hardware to verify the reballing had corrected the issue. However, testing and verification would have to be done on your end probably  since he most likely doesn't have this model laptop as a spare. Still worth a shot in sending him an email. His equipment seem high end and success rate on 360(s), ps3(s) and now the 2011 logic boards, seem 99%, the 1% being other components or issues in conjunction with the AMD chip issues. I'd def write him an email.

First, your post will either get removed or edited by the Apple Forum Moderators.

Second, you will likely get a call from Apple Executive Relations in the next day or two.  Since you did purchase AppleCare, they may cover the out-of-warranty repair.

What they tell you may vary, but if you look through the responses that others have received, I'd advise you to not get too excited or get your hopes up yet, but hopefully your outcome is positive.

    Thanks,

There is honestly nothing to be excited about in what I and other users like me are going through. Its our huge part of savings that we invest in such gadgets and we expect them to be "USE-ABLE".

Hence anything they tell me will only be acceptable as long as it solves my problem. Else really it would all be vain and waste of my as well as their time.

Lets see how and where it goes.
