Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Well, My Mac seems to be in real trouble now.

I have a dedicated partition in my external HDD that acts like a installation media for OS X Mavericks 10.9

i booted my Mac using that partition in my HDD, and this is how it appeared.

    another one...

    image.jpg

I Feel seriously ridiculed by such weird behaviour of an Apple product and even the fact that Apple does nothing about this now. They are busy keeping mum while customers are facing such hard times.

This kinda gives me assurance that even reinstalling OS X Mavericks is not going to do any good whatsoever...

Some one will reply on behalf of him, but they won't really do anything apart from telling you "I am afraid that you will have to go with standard procedure apple care has recommended" which means paying 45000 rs.

This is clearly on our side.Apple by mistake messed up with these machines. Now they just want to move ahead.

Similar thing happened with I mac 2011, They replaced so many I macs.

The AMD chips did not work.Apple knew it from the start.

Some people are getting free repairs but other's are just being ignored on the basis of country.

I am sure that you have some evidence of that claim that you can link to? You wouldn't just make that up, would you?

I got my 17" MBP back from PS3Specialist and it's been running for 12 hours now with no issues. Before I couldn't even boot, so this looks to be huge progress.

    I'll keep you all posted.

For the record, Khaled/PS3Specialist was great to work with. Good communications and quick turnaround from start to finish.

Sad thing is that I've already replaced that laptop as I had to have something to work on so I'll probably just sell it now.

I Started it as separated post, but pertient to this thread too.

A WARNING ABOUT MAILING PARTS TO CHINA FOR REPAIR

I was victim of an SCAM, at ALI Express some merchant (seem one of n aliases) named MacExpert or SUNNY IT, offered full repair of my logic board and worldwide shipment for only 179US$.

I mailed him my logic board Serial  # C0*******RJC, 2 days after receiven after Inquire they acnowledged to have been received it.

They offered repair in just 3 days, but after a week of arcknowlegment of receipt, they sems Missed it, and start Asking me if I have photos of my board, of course I photographed everything I mail just in case at some poin something happens,

then a week later just on deadline for auto-cancelation they mailed an fraudulent DHL tracking. while DHL china sometimes delay 3 days showing tracking data, after a week and no data I inquired they.

Then they rply me *DHL do not ship to remote area, you need another address or  whe can not ship* a total LIE since I Use to import goods from china very Often and DHL my favorite service, after a WEEK telling they this is not possible, then they asked for more money, now because DHL requires 30* for remote area, at this point I was alarmed,

So First DHL can't mail, now can mail if I pay 30$ more? something suspicous here.

Then I answered I CANT PAY MORE, SINCE THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT OFERED FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING AND NO WARNING ON SURCHARGES, SO THEY CANT BILL SHIPMENT SURCHARGES.

At this point I started the DSIPRUTE PROCEDURE AT ALIEXPRESS

Aliexpress Dispute mechanism seems managed by bots, and depends on rules, and the best case only return you the money.

Now the merchant communicated to me and tell me they agree to return my oney but I must to pay for shipmetn... (c ya, I'm ingenous), of course I'm not that fool to send they more money, th only way I settle the dispute is to receive my board repaired at may home whitout spend more money.

    For those interested:

Did I read that right?  GPU Diode was reading 178 degrees celcius?!  The highest mine has gotten was 231 fahrenheit (about 110 celcius).   As for the CPU, highest it has gone was 212 fahrenheit (100 celcius) after which the computer automatically shut down.

What are you running that got the temps so high?

Minus 178 C. suggesting that the temperature sensor is broken or the entire discrete graphic card chipset is broken. I managed to work with the discrete card on and then the temperature is back to normal but I didn't risk it for long. Apparently there is something to do with the iStat software problem but I hadn't noticed that before the graphic card problem occurred.

All these posts all these comments and all these discussions!!What do you think about these.

There was a replacement program for I mac 2011 which had a similar issue with the graphics.

And this issue is being documented since late 2011.

I hope that answers you're question.

Don't listen to him, must be troll, but apple need to hire more like him because this widespread problem get people in different languages and he only trolls in english

And now i'm forced to use my old 2010 because apple can't fix my mac, just change the logic board with another broken logic board. How can i trust them to buy another it will fail when i'm in the middle of a important project, i can't say my employer sorry wait for apple to get lucky logic board that last atleast 6 months to let me finish my job.

Hi Kartik, please keep me posted too. I'm in India too and wondering what the solution is. We shouldn't have to pay for something that isn't our fault.

Of course it doesn't, you accused Apple of knowingly fitting defective parts into the machines they were selling. I asked you for some evidence to support your outrageous claim and you give me some anonymous posts on a website.

On that basis I could claim that you broke all these motherboards, after all I don't have any evidence in support of that claim, just like you.

Same issue with me. I have contacted Apple several times, but they keeps denying their fault to provide defect products to customers. I have tried everything that I can, and feels really tired and frustrated. After all those efforts, all that I can do is to buy a pc which have almost the same price with the cost of the repair. Hope Apple will give an official response to the graphical issues asap.

First of all I am not saying that Apple Installed faulty chips intentionally just so the customers suffer. What I am saying is that Apple knew it just after few months of production.Thats my opinion. And I paid $2500 for a laptop ,So on that basis I can have opinions.

Apple already knows about this and has done nothing. This issue had been "feed-backed" to Apple, written about in the press, whined about by thousands of consumers online, and I'm sure Apple and Cook have received plenty of notations about the issue.

Perhaps Apple could make the case for ignorance regarding the first batch of 2011 MacBook Pros, but I suspect that there’s evidence to the fact that this issue was present pre-production, i.e. Apple knew then that its 2011 MacBook Pros had a higher probability of serious GPU related hardware failures and computing interruptions than acceptable for the quality and value advertised by Apple and portrayed by the price of the 2011 MacBook Pros.

If it didn’t know then, it knew by the end of, if not mid-2011 about the issue, and its continued marketing and sale of these defective laptops, without notifying consumers, potential consumers, the market and/or general public means it knowingly and willingly mislead consumers about, and misrepresented the quality and value (or lack their of) of the 2011 MacBook Pros.

Apple advertised that these 2011 MacBook Pros could utilize the highly marketed advanced functions of two versions of OS (Snow Leopard and Lion), both of which install/include GPU intensive programs. It also promoted and portrayed that these MacBook Pros would be able to withstand other GPU intensive non-Apple programs in the advertisements for these MacBook Pros.

This is, however, false as we all can attest to: overheating, screen glitches, freezes, kernel panics, shutdowns, failures to boot/during startup, are all evidence to the fact that the entire construction of the 2011 MacBook Pros cannot withstand the deficiencies of their included GPU hardware, that these deficiencies seriously limit the operability, quality and value, and permanence of the 2011 MacBook Pros. That these issues begin early into the usage of the machine during normal as-advertised acceptable usage and wear of the machine and thus are evidence to an obvious and critical flaw of the parts and manufacture of the machine, and thus decreases the quality and value of the machine, and thus these MacBook Pros are overpriced lemons, ticking time-bomb booby traps and Apple knew it.

In summary you are saying that Apple deliberately fitted defective parts to new Macs for at least several months.

I think you are full of it.

Whether it was planned obsolescence or not, Apple is obviously now aware of the issue and has done nothing to rectify the situation.
