Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I got my 17" MBP back from PS3Specialist and it's been running for 12 hours now with no issues. Before I couldn't even boot, so this looks to be huge progress.

    I'll keep you all posted.

For the record, Khaled/PS3Specialist was great to work with. Good communications and quick turnaround from start to finish.

Sad thing is that I've already replaced that laptop as I had to have something to work on so I'll probably just sell it now.

Had my 15" 2011 MBP reballed by PS3Specialist and have been using it for a week now. No problems yet either. He responded to all my emails promptly and my computer was in his shop for a mere two days before he shipped it out to return it to me. Definitely recommend him to anybody here.

Actually I love my macbook pro.I think you're silencing users on behalf of Apple.

Now they surely know of the problem.People in Europe are already getting free replacements. That makes it obvious that Apple is aware of the blunder they have made.

    I have nothing against apple.

I just want my mac to be functional again. How can you help me?

And I think that you are just here trolling. So now that's out of the way are there any more accusations you wish to throw around while I am here?

In summary you are saying that Apple deliberately fitted defective parts to new Macs for at least several months.

I think you are full of it.

Whether it was planned obsolescence or not

That's where I cease taking you seriously.

    Good luck.

Got some proof of that, proof that Europeans get free replacements and others don't?

How many stories are you going to tell,? and how many of them will just be stories.

    Good luck.

    > Is it Mavericks?

No, it happens on other OS as well including Snow Leopard.  It's a defective GPU and Apple is hoping people will simply keep paying to replace the same, defective GPU with a logic board repair or give up and buy a new MacBook Pro.  Apple is obviously not doing the right thing here and is spreading ill will among a lot of longtime Mac users, including me.

For those who expect Apple to repair FOR FREE their out-of-warranty Macs:  this will never happen. This is wishful thinking.  This is a bad attitude of entitlement.

Wow... just wow.  It's not called a sense of entitlement, it's called SELF-RESPECT.  Any self-respecting person who pays thousands of dollars for a defective product expects a free repair and then some to compensate for loss of time by no fault of their own.

Any self-respecting person knows the difference between normal wear and tear and a widespread defect in a product.  Please don't project your lack of self-respect insultingly upon others here.  The only one who is acting like they have a bad attitude of entitlement is Apple for not owning up to an obvious defect and doing the right thing by their customers.

Way to go, dude.  Blame the consumers for a faulty product.

Well, won't blame Mavericks for this, but my problems first occured after clean installing my MBP with Mavericks. Haven't had an issue with it for 2,5 years before that.
I had Mavericks on it before, just updated from ML to Maverick without formatting it completely.

On the matter whether Apple knew about faulty chips or not, I don't believe that they have. It would be a really costly affair for them as they probably would have to give in eventually. Why not just let technology do its "thang"? Apples machines are NEVER top of the technological development when its about the hardware, but its enough for most tasks.

Eventually, we would all have to change our MBP 2011. Shouldn't be within 3 years though!

CSound - Can you stop trolling please ? Kartik is right and he's not the only one. There are thousands of affected customers here (and on so many other message boards.) Apple should step up and fix this issue. They're losing more of their reputation daily and current and future customers by pretending this issue doesn't exist.

Csound1 what is your agenda in this thread?

Are you a user with this problem?

Did you take interest in this thread to help people or offer advice?

I haven't read the entirety of the 447 pages (6,701 posts) but from what I have seen from you, you have continuously posted in this thread with responses to users comments in a negative unhelpful way.

Yes a lot of comments are not factually correct by some people and they are venting their frustration with off the cuff comments or posting links which technically shouldn't be here (Breach of T&C's).

Are you a moderator? Because if so try to be impartial and moderate in the quiet without sounding quite so sarcastic and nit picky towards users that are quite frankly out of pocket with un-workable machines which cost a lot of money and it is quite evident due to the growing trend this is a design defect.

Apple needs to hold their hands up on this one and respond officially to their customers. Not on a case by case basis behind the scenes fobbing the majority off who don't have consumer laws on their side.

Thankfully Apple repaired my MBP for free under consumer law (UK), but many have not been so lucky and thats unfair!! not because I live in a country with better laws but because Apple knows there is a problem and is only abiding by laws and warranty instead of honestly and respect for their customers.

I have no need to read the entirety of the thread I am just pointing out your recent posts to it have all sounded rather nit picky and unhelpful.

From a personal point of view Apple have done right by me and admitted via email and phone that my MBP should not of suffered this issue within its 2 and a half years of life and have replaced the Logicboard for free.

Whether this was because I would have had Consumer Law on my side in my country to be the real reason why they fixed me for free is unknown for sure, but I suspect it was only down to this and I still feel much aggrieved for the other people and the fact Apple as a company have not done the right thing for everyone.
