Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I am currently in progress to move all my data from HFS to ExFAT file system so that I can access it when I don't have access to my Mac. Which I think is going to be very soon, No! I am not paying for getting my logic board replaced. I would rather consider buying a new cheap laptop with linux on board or may be planning something more exciting like building up a Desktop computer from scratch using individual parts bought online from cheap stores like Snapdeal, Infibeam, eBay, Rediff Shopping, Tradus, Flipkart, etc.

However I plan to actively follow this thread and contribute to it as and when possible.

For CSound1, please simply ignore his posts. Such trolls will be there across every site on the internet, these are like abandoned people, who have been socially rejected and hence they rejoice gaining attention and pouring their frustration on the internet on such forums. They aren't of any help to anyone, but creating havocs is their prime motto.

Looking forward to stay uptodate with this thread and contribute as and when necessary.

One more thing wanted to mention, after a fresh install of Mavericks (a complete reinstall, deleted everything from my Mac's HDD, even the recovery partition) I haven't faced any issues till now, its been just over 24 hours now and my system is continuously running as I am copying huge files from one Hard Disk (HFS formatted) to another hard disk (ExFAT formatted).

I haven't installed anything at all on this fresh installation except just Adobe Flash Player as I wanted to test on Safari watching high definition youtube videos just to be sure that for the time being it works fine.

Hey I did a fresh install and everything.I would suggest you keep you're laptop as cool as possible and get gfx and put it on integrated. And make sure you're  laptop does not turn off.If it does then it will be a problem to boot it.

You don't have a Mac Pro, you have a Macbook Pro. A Mac Pro is another and different machine.

    Can't you get anything right?

    Hi all just an update.

I was requested to take my MBP into my nearest apple store so that they could ***** it and work out what the problem is (despite me telling them numerous times) I was surprised that when I went in for my genius appointment before they even took a look at my computer the staff member showed me that on my account the Customer Relations person I spoke to had already applied some codes to my account. They applied a code that meant I didn't have to pay to have the computer assed and to my surprise there was a code for a Logic Board replacement. All this before they had even looked at my computer... So I take it they already knew what the issue was based on my complaints.

Its now Monday (3 days later) and I've picked up my MBP with the new logic board in it free of charge, bare in mind my machine is over 3 years old and outside the Apple Care warranty. Also because I live in Australia the new logic board is covered for 2 years. Not just the weak 90 days that Apple issue. So thankfully if the same issue happens again in the next 2 years (and we all know that it will) by law Apple has to replace the Logic Board again free of charge.

So all of this happened because of the email that I sent. In less than a week as well. Moral of the story? Start complaining to the right people.

Mine MacBook Pro 17 early 2011 has had the same problem...

    Any clues?

    I try to summarize:

Given that I would be happy to use the HD3000 with which, using LightRoom, I have never had any problems.
Given that to give them 500 euro to replace the motherboard seems to me an exaggeration, with the possibility, not too remote, that the problem will recur soon.

    What alternatives are there?

The problem comes from the heat, in fact when the machine is completely cold, the computer will also work with the discrete graphics card ... do you think would make sense to open the mac, and roll out a new conductive paste? Someone did it and received some benefit?

Optionally, you know where to buy the two-chip video card? I could replace the chip directly...  it might be worth trying if it is possible to buy chips and if they cost little.

Finally ... how can we force the mac to use only the HD3000? I found somewhere these commands to be issued in single user ... what do you think?

I ran these commands (in the Single user Mode - Command+S when you start the Mac) to deactivate the GPU (by removing its drivers) and then was able to boot.

    /sbin/fsck -fy /

    /sbin/mount -uw /

    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions

    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions

    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .

    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .

    touch /System/Library/Extensions

    exit

I believe that they can only make sense once the mac loads the system, but at the start might not be, what do you think?

The last option is to use GFX Card Status and setting to use ever and ever the HD3000... but sometime it doesn't function.

    Thanks.

    Danilo

    Thank you.

    Danilo

    Who did you email?

Another frustrated early 2011 MacBook Pro user with GPU issues here. I've gone to the Apple Store multiple times, called multiple times and continue to get the run around.

Interestingly, the last "Senior Adviser" I spoke to on the phone mentioned that Apple may create a service program for this issue and if they do anyone who has paid for a repair would be reimbursed.

What was this Senior Advisors name, when did he say this, when did he say that the 'Service Program' would start.?

His name was Brent, I spoke to him Friday and he didn't say when it would start.

So, if I understand you correctly, on Friday you were told by a Senior Apple Advisor that Apple will pay for customers past repairs, and start a Service Program for machines that still have this issue. Is that about right (this is what Brent told you).

ItsJosh said that Brent told him that Apple MAY start a service program. Not that they had!

I suspect it's just a fob off from the service advisor (Brent), but here's too hoping!

I can read thanks, I am reading the words of an anonymous poster quoting a man called Brent who says that Apple may start a service program, but doesn't know when.
