Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Good morning to everyone

I want to share my case.

A week ago I was working with Photoshop CC on my MacBook Pro 15-inch early 2011. While I was working my Mac was really hot. When I finished working I closed Photoshop and suddenly the display turned blue with black vertical lines. I turned off the Mac with the power button. I waited 20 minutes and I tried to turn it on. After the boot the display turned blue with the black lines.

So I called the Apple Care (even if I was out of warranty) and the guy, after some tests, said that I have to pay for a new logic board.

I was aware about the problems that afflict these machine so I sent an email to Tim Cook. The day after a woman from Ireland called me and she said that my Mac is out of warranty so I have to pay for the repair but an expert will call me the day after.

Today the expert has called me and we've tried to boot the Mac in safe mode, obviously nothing has changed. He has said to me that he will investigate on this problem. After an hour the woman from Ireland has called me and she said that the expert confirmed that the problem is the logic board. She said that I have to pay for the repair.

I said to her that there are a lot of owners on the internet with my same problem. She said that I can't trust in the internet. She added the there is a department in Apple that is testing these machines but for the moment there aren't problems; in case Apple will make a replacement program but she doubt.

I will not repair my Mac because I don't think it is the solution and because for the same cost (600€ here in Italy) I can buy a Mac mini that hasn't this problem.

    Xslipper,

There is no magic here. This is a hardware issue. People have proven it in pictures and action (reballing).  Unless your fix is a hardware fix, you are going to see your issue return.

The other possible explanation is you didn't have this issue in the first place.

And this "fix" that you discovered can easily be performed by an ordinary user or need tech skills?

Thank you for sharing your experience.  I don't blame you for worrying that the problem will simply happen again since the defect has so many others returning their machines multiple times until they give up.  I'm on my 3rd repair at this point myself and just waiting for my ticking timebomb early 2011 17inch MacBook Pro GPU to fail again.

Regrettably, I've seen people attempt to discuss this issue on Reddit within their r/apple subreddit and quite a few people (who may or may not work for Apple public relations) keep trying to tell everyone that it's not a widespread issue.

Everyone has the same entitlement to an opinion as you do, but that's all it is, an opinion. Your suggestion that Apple employees may be behind the Reddit posts is very tacky

    That's my opinion.

For Apple to claim that we're all a bunch of liars here is very infuriating considering how much time and money so much of us have lost here due to their defect they refuse to ethically address.

Keep up the pressure and also check your consumer laws in your country and see if your consumer office can assist you.  This isn't right, Apple.  This just isn't right.

    Hi,

I've never talked to you before in my life and I don't know you, so I'm not sure why you feel free to introduce yourself to me disrespectfully with such a hostile tone.  I hope you don't work for Apple, nor represent Apple in any shape or form because, in my opinion, this isn't a professional way for you to act towards an Apple consumer.

It's one thing to offer your opinion that you disagree with me, but it's quite another to lace your opinion with an unprovoked, personal insult.  Please refrain from personal insults in the future if you want to discuss issues with me with mutual respect.  I wouldn't put up with that in person, so there's no reason for me to put up with it here.

I don't know if they are Apple public relations or not and that's why I said they "may or may not" work for Apple PR.  In my opinion, I regard those with suspicion that have knee-jerk reactions to act as apologists for Apple and/or dismiss this issue as not widespread despite evidence to the contrary.  I would publish the links to the evidence beyond just the sheer number of posts here (that is growing every day), but I've tried before and they were deleted.

I appreciate your opinion that you don't agree with me and you may very well be correct that most or all of those people on that Reddit subreddit have nothing to do with Apple PR.  I apologize if this suspicion on my part hurts your own personal sensibilities, but that wasn't my intention especially considering I've never discussed this issue (nor any other issue with you) personally before.

    Sincerely,

    D

So, instead of a apology for your personal attack, you double down and go for the intimidation and censorship angle.  I also now see that you have a solid history within this thread of being hostile with other Apple consumers as well.

While you're at it, please also go ahead and report your previous, rude response to me to moderation as well.  Personal insults are forbidden by the Terms of Use for this site, the same terms you agreed to.

Actually, I will go ahead and get someone on that for you.  I'm also now contacting my first tier advisor at Apple in Cupertino I've been working with this year and get him to take a look at your post and ask him to take action as well.  An apology for being rude could have gone a long way, but I see that you lack the respect to do that.

    Sincerely,

    D

You've mocked and jeered at myriads of postings with unsubstantial replies when your opinion (although perhaps valid in your mind), is neither helpful or merited. You are spamming this thread.

Ok, so now I'm tacky and I'm a person who doesn't merit common respect.  Do you have any other insults towards this Apple customer that you'd like to add or are you done here?

If you can't be respectful towards people simply because you disagree with them, then you really don't understand how respect nor common decency works at all.  I've never had any contact with you before in my life and you insulted me unprovoked.  I think that says far more about your character than it does about me.

    Respectfully,

I am sad that there is still no real solution to this. I've been without my early 2011 MacBook Pro for a few months.
