Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Guys, we got to a whole new level, I did a post explaining that is has occurred to me and that I got blue screens and greey screens and I said that I can't stand this and this not to the consumer to pay for a generic issue and I have been deleted ! (I don't know which part got me deleted)

At first I thought I had not post, but a guy just above me posting links to the petition and to a website got deleted to.
Can someone confirm that he/she received a mail for response to the subject with my text ?

Thanks, can you send it back to me at macbookpro2011 (at) yopmail.com ? I would like to have a copy of it.

Anyway I took a rendez vous with a genius but don't expect much of it.

I will say again that the solution of NVRAM reset and using single mode to repair disk and fix boot permissions can help you retrieve an alive macbook pro after multiple tries, and  then you will be able to install smcFanControl to fix the spinning rotation of the fan to 4000 (for better cooling) and gfxcardstatus to prevent the switch to the AMD and thus having a working macbook pro for surfing the web, mails and coding. Forget about gaming and heavy applications though.

I will keep you updated with my appointment at the apple store

Add another to the list. Been troubleshooting a early 2011 17" for a client over the last year.

Initially he went to the Apple Store with a few weeks left on AppleCare. They refused to replace it, stating there was a spill.

I looked at it the next day, diagnosed a failing hard drive and it was working fine again. The "spill" was some kind of rubber/plastic material just slightly melted over the very edge of the heat sink. It wasn't even close to any functional part, and certainly was not a spill and was not the source of any problems.6 months l

About 6 months later, the computer starts to boot, the Apple and spinner disappear followed by a grey screen the never goes away. Wasn't it a nice move by Apple to find a reason to not fix a known bad machine and kill the warranty early.

BTW, many spills can be recovered from 100%. I've washed logic boards with coffee, water, beer, wine and tea spills. Even soda (pop) once. Though, if you let the sugar crystalize, it's pretty much a no go. The pencil eraser sized goop that melted in from the outside exhaust vent was NOT the source of any problems.

Sorry, I only saw it but didn't have a chance to copy anything.... I can't see it from my end neither... I think I'm gonna take my mbp back to them, I'm really disappointed at this. I have already written an angry comment on their after repair survey... Don't know if they care.... Please keep me updated with your appointment with them.

    I'm from Ukraine.

I have a laptop for 2 years and also started the same problems.

Poi search led to the fact that the graphics chip can not burn, but simply collapsed soldering.

I will try to recover it by heating the chip soldering hairdryer.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro 2011 17". Called local Mac repair shop and they immediately knew the problem. Apple has always been great about taking care of problems... at least based on my experiences and this seems like one of those design/manufacturing flaws. I am going to hold out as long as possible with the hope that Apple will continue doing right by their customers even after Jobs.

I sent in a complaint to Apple and all they did was reply with a generic response of your laptop is out of AppleCare warranty x months, and we won't do anything.  It's time Apple starts feeling the bellicosity of it's consumers and keep hammering them with complaints until they give in.  I don't know of any other way, and I am certainly not going to take this on the chin.

I have used Apple products for decades and this is truly a slap across the face.  If Apple won't do anything, then I will sell everything Apple in my house and go to PC's.  I've had both a 2008 MBP and 2011 MBP and they had very similar GPU issues, and all Apple did was kick the can down the road with their faulty engineering practices.

I have this problem for nearly a year now and several person before me. Apple doesn't seem to care about fixing this issue as it going to cost them big bucks to recall all these machines, or to redesign the motherboard with a new GPU chip setup. Im thinking that the only way to force apples hands is a class action lawsuit. There is more than enough grounds for it.

Waht's up with the link at the top of the page saying, "Branched to a new discussion."  When I hit that link, it says unauthorized,.. what's up at that secret link?

That branched discussion was due to be mentioning which what entity I filed a complaint against Apple and the mention of a petition site I had urged individuals of this thread to sign.  This thread is being heavily scrutinized.  Basically, they deleted my post, by branching it off and deleting it.

Petitions are explicitly banned in the terms that you agreed to, is your intention to break the terms, and your word?

Don't get so dramatic, merely mentioning a name of a site is forbidden apparently, which I did not know, and I didn't post a link or mention it directly by title.

I have this problem too on my MacBook pro.

This past weekend (on Saturday, July 26, 2014) my screen shifted with a multicolored pattern and it seemed the video card was going out.  Upon reboot, it seems to boot fine, but at the end of the booting process it doesn't display the desktop, I just have a grey screen.  I took it to the Mac Genius yesterday at the Highland Village Apple Store and he didn't seem to argue with me about it being the video card, he just presented me with an option to have it repaired offsite for $310.  Said I should hear from them via telephone perhaps Friday (in 5 days.)

If this is a known manufacturing defect, how do I get it repaired under recall?
