Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Let's get back to the discussion about the problem itself and let's not fall prey to anyone who is trying to take advantage of our situation and trying to put his own conclusions of the facts, in our minds. let's ignore the trolls

    hello officer Csound1

you know better than anyone here we can't post those kind of links, TOS thing and all...

but I get your point, we imagine there is so many of us while we don't even exist.

You can post whatever you want, but if it contravenes the rules you have agreed to it will be removed. Perhaps you could learn to keep your word? then your posts would not be removed.

    Simple really.

Forget the trolls, and parallel discussions. Share the posts where you talk about the problems that MBP 2011 are having, spread to the world, so that everyone has the same problem know that there are people organizing to confront the problem. Personally I do not think it's coincidence that at 3 years many MBP falter similar characteristics. I do not even think there's a single problem, but a series of faults arising from design (or, who knows, something worse, like planned obsolescence ...). Keep up sending negative feedback to the official site: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

It might be interesting to make a list of serial numbers, or something similar, to know the real extent of the problem, but I understand it is somewhat difficult to articulate.

all you're always talking about have nothing to do with this thread, that is why you're labeled as troll.

but even simpler, you could also start a new thread about this all TOS vs freedom of speech conflict now, why don't you?

Csound1, you really simply become unprofessional. So far I respected your moderation, but intentionally make people angry, that's pretty childish.

Your rules dont allow to post link states of many people are concerned but you still ask us to put it. You loose the thin credibility you might still have. Good job.

By the way I think the easier we can do now is to create another thread where people just state they have the problem and we edit the first page.

If not done tomorrow I will. This should meet the TOS

    just to count them easier?

well why not, still wouldn't prove anything for Apple or Csound1, would be hard to keep people from just posting one and only message, though.

Do you think it's easier to make people go to court together ? No.

My laptop work I did change the gpu, I dont do it for me but obviously this topic is not what is needed.

No, I just asked and said it wouldn't be much of a proof, legally, and that it would also be hard to moderate.

Not that the idea was bad or anything.

There is no freedom of speech on this site, it has a membership requirement and you agreed to the Terms of Use when you joined. If you adhere to the terms that you agreed to there will be no post removals.

My early 2011 Macbook Pro broke on Sunday. Took it in to the Apple Store in Omotesando and they said they couldn't repair it for free. They offered me a flat rate repair for around £240 but I said there was no point in paying that amount of money for something that will probably break again. My confidence in Apple isn't exactly high right now. The other 3 Macs I bought are still running fine aside from a few cracks and battery problems. 3 years is far too short a life for a £1800 computer...
