Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Same here. Just 1 month after the end of my 3 year Apple Care contract, my MBP Early 2011 has severe GPU malfunction since yesterday. 2000+ Euros are gone after 37 months. I am VERY, VERY disappointed. Shame on you, Apple!

I don't expect any help from Apple. I really don't know what to do next.... I am shocked.

I obviously haven't read the 7000+ posts on this thread, but I've gone through a substantial amount of them and I'm pretty sure I'm experiencing the same issues as all the other posters.

Early 2011 Macbook Pro - AMD 6750 GPU

It's my wife's machine, which she needs on a daily basis for work. It first experienced graphical glitches, but it's now to the point were it won't go past the grey screen with fans revving to the max on boot-up.

I guess there is nothing I can say that hasn't been said before.

It's just sad that we're closing a 1,000,000 views on this topic, but no one at Apple seems to have taken notice.

This was a great machine during the time it worked, but we expected more than just 3 years of use out of it since it was top of the line when bought.

Not being in position to just wait and see, we might have to bite the bullet and buy a new computer. Some might say this is good news for Apple, I say they no longer have a happy customer.

I have just left feedback, (complaint) but didn't know which category to put it in. What do you recommend?

It is indeed weird that there is a topic with 940 000 views without anyone from apple take notice. Also at my service point they say this problem is unknown to them.

In my case. My service point claims video artifacts are caused by my SSD samsung 830 pro.... first time i heard a SSD would cause video video artifacts. How could that happen ? How could a HDD while booting interact with the GPU ?

I contacted our local Apple store after my problems started, and after reading this thread on apple support, and they said they had not heard of this problem either. They offered to exchange my logic board for $429. but would only guarantee it for 30 days. I decided to wait.

, unfortunately this thread could be twice bigger, it wouldn't change a thing, it is from users to users only and Apple refuse to acknowledge anything being written here so when they say the problem is unknown to them it probably means they don't have any internal and official information on this matter being widespread or at least noticeable.

now it depends who you are talking to, I spoke to some "geniuses" aware of it, some were not.

if you have same problems as everyone here, especially difficulties to start the computer, it probably is CPU/GPU related and not SSD.

you could try to boot from an external system installed on an HD or something, even starting on the recovery partition should be a pain with a CPU/GPU failure.

, you basically have two choices, have a reball or pay Apple for another faulty logic board that will eventually fail again hopefully before the end of the warranty which should be 90 days and not 30 by the way.

some managed to get a new computer after 3 logic board replacements but that is not a promise.

if you really need your computer and not much money in your pocket, find a good reballer.

if you want to play, go the Apple way and see how it works out.

either way, no software trick will solve anything, hardware issue right here.

    good luck fellas.

Same problem here (MBP15 early 2011): SOLVED with GPU rebolling for just 100€ (obviously not in the local Apple store).
Avoid using Flash player as much as possible.

Why??? My reball wasn't 100% successful and I want to know if his brand new GPU is holding up.

thanks for sharing the link , the few websites that covered this issue were getting a bit old by now, haven't update as they should have.

I'm afraid major Apple related sites are too much Apple dependent to risk getting the wrath of the brand for relaying this obvious problem plaguing the early and late 2011 15" and 17" MacBook Pro lines.

    Didn't you get it repaired?

Or is it acting up again?

Just wanted to add my name to the list. Same symptoms, same death, same response from Apple store. $310 flat rate repair, 90 day guarantee on that. I asked the Apple dude what he would do. He said that with the repair I should expect the computer to last on average around a year before something else going wrong, then asked if a year of use was worth $310 to me.

    Yikes.
