Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I have to apologize I'm quite irritated by some post here try to just make Apple looks like a company have nothing wrong in their laptop conception.

Anyway, about the sata, it's not the cable, it's the chipset. If you search over the web you can find numerous machine made in early 2011 have a deficient chipset. This chipset is Sata3 compliant but cause crash/corruption at this speed. For example that's why the MacbookPro as always been sell with a Sata2 Hard drive even if at this time it's was already possible to find Sata3 (I can't find the report anymore state that the intel chipset have defect, but I will definitely try)

So far, you can do the test if you have a early 2011, plug a Sata3 in place of the optical drive or the main hard drive (But so far the problem is also on the optical drive). I did fix the problem by finding a Sata 2 drive (And let me tell you, that's kind of a journey in 2014 haha)

On a 2011 MBP the main drive bay has a Sata3 connection and the optical bay has a Sata2 connection. This is not an error, optical drives are very slow and don't need a fast connection.

Correct with the early 2011 but the late 2011 has SATA3 on the ODD port; That's installing plenty of optibay drive doublers for clients for you. Have to choose drives that run in SATA2 mode too for the early 2011 also.

Yep ! Thanks for your support.

Meanwhile I still sure that's if the port wasn't dedicated to run in sata3, they will block it in the firmware and simply run at the top speed he can Since the hard drive can ... it's funny, hard drive manufacturer did the right things, screwed up by a mistake like this ...

A Sata2 connection is faster than most SSD's are. Please learn a little bit about the topics you post on.

No Standard Industry Practices exist for people who want to change what the manufacturer made. You don't have a standard Mac anymore, you have the one you made.

If want an optibay in an early 2011 its a case of picking the right one - the one classic spinning disk that works great is the hsgt 1000 model. You downgrade it to handshake in SATA2 only with a bootable CD utility.  The late 2011 I have a client with a pair of 1Tb 840 EVO's running at full pelt with the second in the optibay. Works great but then again I always re do the thermal paste properly for any 2011 model 15/17 I open up..

You should learn what you are talking about. Find a Sata 2 hard drive now it's almost impossible ! Or super expansive ! How could you be so arrogant ?!?

I have the right to buy a Sata 3 JUSTE BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY INTERFACE AVAILABLE NOW, even if it's running in Sata 1 mod !!!! It's compatible for everyone except apple.

    I don't give a **** of the speed.

Can you guys take your SATA Wars to another galaxy, please? One far, far away. Like, another thread?

By trial and error with drives working in SATA3 driving me nuts worked for me lol. Get the HSGT and downgrade the SATA3 to SATA2 via a CD.  OWC sell a 1TB HSGT they downgrade by default to SATA 2 for those who don't have another PC or a Mac Pro with the drive stuck into a sled like I do mine!

Agreed. This thread is about the GPU. Not about the optical drive and not about SATA connections.

You do not get to choose who posts what, or where they post it. This is a public forum. If you don't like it the answer is obvious.

Lol apologies - incorrect advice from those who spend all their times on forums instead of having them to bits in real life is a bit of an irritation for me
