Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

"We removed your post [...] because it contained inappropriate language or comments"

it is vague enough considering what I wrote to justify my wish to know a bit more about what was considered inappropriate in my comments.

but nobody cares, let's forget about it.

"Speculation is banned on this forum", is that in the TOU too ?

maybe my first question would have provided some personal information about you, maybe not, I don't know but if I try to guess, that could be perceived as speculating, right?

the second question is just asking your opinion on a situation that could happen to you since you own a 2011 mbp (and if I follow your logic and kinda resume your previous statements) while the cpu-gpu issue have not been proved to be a widespread issue, computers parts do break at some point and nothing is weird about that.

questioning each other here about what could be the cause of our problem and what our options are to fix it could also be considered as speculation then.

some people have said what they would do if their gpu starts causing problems, why don't you then?

    you're right, sorry I slipped.

Farazlarik got entertained for a minute, though.

I wanted to warn Wheel-Idiot-No.1 not to try and justify himself to him but I got censored so I thought maybe I can try to get an honest response on the subject from him for a change, he's level 8 so, I'm speculating here, maybe that means he can provide us some useful advice if he were to experience the same problem as we do.

    you know...

will do what I can to stick to it

I will soon switch team, from "my cpu-gpu is having soldering issues" to the "reballed them together by a pro".

my computer is 3 years and a month old, no games, no video work, no heavy graphic use but I bought this baby 2500€ and was sold as being able to do it all indeed like a pro, just like its name states it.

already lost 7 months with this problem and while I managed to live with it avoiding it to freak out on me, this is not how I want to use this MacBook (Pro).

I will keep this thread informed on how it goes after the reball but what I do know is that in the future the only way I will buy an Apple computer is by renting it with an option to buy, and I won't probably ever buy it but change it for a newer one especially since we can't upgrade the new configurations.

just like an iPhone, when you get a new one, you get rid of the old one.

disposable technology, that's progress they say in the marketing dept.

Wish I bought the 2012 one, though, since it is basically the same specs but better (usb3, bluetooth 4...) but those two are the last mbp that I intend to own and keep for years.

    good luck my friends

Well, my time has arrived. I'm having this issue. I bought mine in 2012, I may still have warranty. But if I'm afraid they "solve" the problem and then days after the machine returns the problem returns also and then the warranty may be over and I sure don't have money to fix this. Obviously Apple doesn't care about this issue, it would cost them too much.

since I'm around, let me tell you.

Apple will ask you to pay for a logic board replacement that will most likely fail the same way, under the 3 months of warranty if you're lucky.

best way to get it back fully working for cheap is to get it reballed by someone with skillz, there a few here in this thread, depending on the country you're living in.

ask around but be sure to register your problem with Apple, get a case number and send them feedback.

    good luck

GUYS i think i have solution for lot of us. It was said here before but i think someone deleted those posts.

My MBP was out around 2 months. I tried everything, but nothing worked for me (i had blue screen, vertical gray lines, can't boot in).

Two days before i found here a post, where one guy was explaining that you must warm your computer till it turns off and than run it.

I did how he told. Put my MAC into bag, insert into bed and waited till it turns off because of warm. When it does, i turned it ON and it

WORKED!!! My mac is currently stable i think,  but one thing you must to do is that you CANT USE your dedicated GPU!!

You must install gfxcardstatus and always set up it to use integrated gpu. GL.

    well, I'm still around so..

while it can be a punctual help to access your system and then registering your problem to Apple, getting a case number, that is also a good way to backup everything if you haven't before.

but really, this is no fix to anything, your mac will already shut itself down even without the bag and it probably getting things worse in the long run since the heat already caused the chips to have soldering problems in the first place.

and that could also damage other parts too so it might help once but that's no solution.

can help if after trying to restart 10 or 20 times you only get a grey screen, though, I don't know.

    Hi,

Same pb with MBP 15" early 2011...

I read hundreds of threads, discussions etc...

I think writing emails is useless but they go directly to trash or junk especially when you write to the CEO.

I had problem with different provider and I always had a quick answer and the big plus is everybody sees it.

We should all tweet to let them know how unhappy we are and who knows... There is a #mbp2011 already existing

We are all Mac lovers, we spent a lot on these products and this is for a reason. A laptop should run at least 6-7 years and 2 to 3.

there is definitely something wrong here.

    Hi nyco75

You might even win a 100€ off for buying a new product, I know I did.

There is indeed a #mbp2011 on twitter.

someone here might disagree with you stating a laptop should run at least 6-7 years but I'm private joking now.

my previous mbp from 2007 that I don't own anymore is still running fine so I can only agree with the fact a computer should run for lot of years, even own a first generation of iMac that still runs fine but is pretty useless to me.

don't know about Mac lovers but I personally am used to deal with a Mac OS system for 14 years and while I don't have much against windows, I don't see myself switching.

only positive side from this absurd situation is I discovered linux ubuntu OS and will keep using it on the side, will probably try others like arch but not as my primary though.

so thanks for this Apple, at least.

yes something is wrong, the question is whether you are willing to wait and see if Apple makes it right by us 2011 mbp owners or not but it might never happen and they don't care much since they are getting new customers each and everyday.

No really, product liability in the EU is transnational. If the product is defective you can sue apple, but rarely in a class action suite. Go ask a EU lawyer this and he will tell you the same thing, besides EU product liability is much stricter than national laws on the subject. there are a about 200 operative devices to punish companies with, SONY was banned from importing their PS3s because the internal cabling and the multi layered PCB board contained dangerous residual chemicals. This was a EU wide measure a decade ago, since then product liability has expanded and improved.

TAke je care enjoy yourself and stop emailing me.
