Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

So, emailing both Eddy and Craig got your problem solved?  You received a standing offer to have a fixed price repair performed, and you rejected it.  Your definition of "effective" is decidedly different from mine.

Click on "Latest Reply" in the line below the heading. Should work.

Perhaps not. I mean, the effectiveness of your posts in actually helping anyone is nil.

I just started having this issue approximately a month ago (I have an early 2011 15-inch model that I purchased in August 2011 - 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 6750M, and upgraded to Mavericks when that version of the OS came out).  I also did a clean reinstall of the operating system two months ago.  I didn't get AppleCare.

I can't even turn off Automatic Graphics Switching - when I click on it, the screen goes totally black and so far can only be fixed with a reboot.  I've tried reseting the NVRAM/PRAM to no avail.  I have Parallels and Windows 8.1 installed on a Boot Camp partition, and it is suffering similar issues.

After reading some of this thread, I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort taking it to my local Apple store.  And I am now seriously debating whether my next notebook/laptop system will be an Apple.

Moderators have deleted two of my recent posts which pointed people to this thread. They are definitely not handling this issue well.

    Hi MBP users,

Anyone with the same GPU issue, appreciate if you can add value to your complaints by doing the following. Unfortunately, Apple does not monitor this forum.

    1. Call Apple Care Contact Apple for support and service
    2. Point them to this thread. Ask them why Apple is keeping quiet on this known issue?
    3. Get a case number and inform them to follow up with the on-site/certified Apple service provider.

They "should" offer a sound/amicable solution.

    cheers

So this thread keeps on growing and growing and no action from Apple... I thank the dude that modified that Linux Mint distribution, at least I can use my macbook... I am a web programmer so I dont need any specific mac software...  just wish someone could do that with OSX.

You're a web developer and you can't figure out how to get around a thread?

    Really?

Oh, give it a rest!  It's not immediately apparent how to get to the end - took me a while.  Pity you can't have your points deducted for being a troll.

    Dear CSound1,

You are in breach of Apple Support Communities Use Agreement 2.2:

Perhaps this will help you get past the navigation quandary.

I was not addressing you, and you are not a moderator.

But when you provide some help to others (a place you have yet to venture) and are awarded points by the those you have helped you will be afforded the privilege of reporting posts.

    But not before then.

let me rephrase so I don't get censored.

you probably thought he meant being a UI developer because web developer doesn't imply you can get around all interfaces across the web like you the one who designed it.

    1. Please don't imagine that you know what I thought, you were wrong.

    2. I don't think that pushing the latest reply link (in blue near the top of the page) is very complicated, for anyone, let alone a 'web developer'

But as I see that some can't figure it out I posted a picture for them to look at.
