Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    thanks for the picture, really.

was almost about to give another point.

anything to say about the subject for a change?

2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card, that is.

    As it should be.

    Didn't expect anything less.

In fact, I didn't even read them. Who does?

And you can comment on that, I don't care.

Using common sence is enough mostly.

Some people however don't seem to have or be able to use that.

    Resulting in annoying other people...

Comment would seem to be superfluous.

I Agree. If you spend money them you are taking the wrong approach. Make apple replace it.

    Adding my name to thread.

My early 2011 15" MBP just died on me. Boots up to white screen with green horizontal lines and freezes there. After a few mins the screen turns light grey and the fan in the back starts whirring loudly.

It was working fine until latest OS update, but judging by this thread it looks like this had been a pre-existing issue with the hardware.

Please someone at Apple, do something to resolve this issue.

My Macbook Pro 17" Late 2011 has experienced the same issues as described in this post.

I believe in my case the computer hardware is perfectly operational as long as the GPU and/or CPU was not pushed too hard - so I was pretty sure this is a likely to be a thermal issue.

As Apple does not currently have a recall for this computer and I'm out of warrantee - I thought I would have a go and see if I could fix the issue myself.

After opening the computer I discovered the following:

    1. Some of the ports on the heat sink were blocked with dust - these were easily cleaned.

    2. The CPU, GPU and GPU Switching processors had extremely thickly applied thermal paste - most of it was spread out over the chip and solder. The contact areas also had gaps in the paste.

I was very surprised by this and have never seen thermal paste on a production board look like this.

I cleaned off the thermal paste and reapplied some MX4 thermal paste.

Now the computer keeps much cooler and so far no visual issues or crashes even when CPU and GPU loaded.

Hopefully the computer will not need an expensive logic board replacement.

    Thanks Steve for your post.

Do you have a picture of what you done regarding thermal paste?

It's an interesting point fo view actually, We more or less all agree that the issue comes from the GPU (maybe bad solders) because of an excess of heat?

--> blocked heat sinks and thermal paste

What if we would have to "service" the computer every year like a car: open the case, get read of the dust, check heat sink...

Regarding the solders i guess only professional can diagnostic that...

An addendum to my previous post: I can log-in and used Mavericks via Safe Mode just fine (of course, Automated Graphics Switching is disabled although I can turn it back on in Safe Mode) with no problems.  Occasionally I'll see some horizontal line distortions, but they disappear after a few seconds.  I'll probably take it to the local Apple Store next week and see what they say (and hopefully get a cost estimate).

Question for those in-the-know: Have any other model years of the MacBook Pros had this issue? I'm looking at new laptops and I wonder if the more recent models have had the same problems.

So why do you repeatedly breach them, as I pointed out?  Your taunts are inflammatory and breach the Terms that you continually cite.

Well, Apple is a very "premium" product.

For a very "premium" price of course.

You mean on a non-Apple production board?

As all the macbooks I had in for repairs where like that, to much thermal paste applied.
