Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Sorry to say that option 3 is not a solution, cause for many here including me after getting the Logic Board replaced the issue came back in less than 12 months (at least for me), so option 1 or 2 are the only ones that might fix the issue for good.

Have you tried option 1 or 2 on the replacement logic board? It would be interesting to others to know if either worked.

No, I didn't try options 1 or 2 yet, my macbook is now in Apple getting fixed (hopefully this time not just replacing the logic board again but maybe doing a better fix like replacing the board for a 2013 MBP model or reballing or something that will fix it for good, but I doubt it), so when it comes back if the fix was just replacing the logic board for the second time I might consider trying to get a new macbook pro with a discounted price from Apple and leaving my old one with them, will see how that goes.

Many thanks for your answer steve1080.

I was thinking of your first option. I already dismounted several macbook and iphones so I'm pretty confident about applying new thermal paste. For your other two options, I don't know any reballing places and for the logic board replacement I think it is really too risky. It will cost about 800 dollars in Switzerland and you then only get a three month warranty...

I will apply new thermal paste on GPU and CPU as soon as I have time, and post results here.

    Regards,

    Nico

I don't think is the thermal paste...furthermore, I guess is the bad and cheap GPU! That could be solved if the Logicboard is changed. Of course, this is not cheap for Apple, but they make milliards of dollars with us. I expect a serious technical support for the expensive device (MBP). Finally, I can't buy every year a new one.

Victim reporting, late 2011 15"  MacBook Pro started glitching and crashing yesterday when on discrete GPU (AMD Radeon HD 6750M). Have to use gfxCardStatus to force the internal chip to keep it stable, which also seems to disable any external monitors. Not cool for productivity.

Gonna apply better thermal paste, but it does not seem to happen at only high temperatures...

on July 22nd I had my early 2011 mbp 15 to apple 3 months after warrantee expired bad logic board.

    $310 + tax and repaired.

this macbook sat on a desk for its whole life and was connected to the Apple TB monitor the entire life.

so I am saying this specific macbook pro has as close to zero handling as you can get and still happened.

my fear is that it will happen again and i will than be SOL...

I can only hope Apple will do the right thing and replace all our our systems with equal systems.

Also have an Alienware gaming laptop that i purchased same time and it is flawless, Apple Step it up...

If Steve were still here this would already be fixed!

Good luck Nico - hopefully it will fix your issues.

I did the thermal paste last weekend and the computer has been very heavily used this week with no issues yet - so I'm hopeful that the issue was thermally related and that I caught it in time. At least for now its working and its running much cooler.

Just did the 'DEPO' repair option with Apple (they wanted to charge $310 until the haggled the store manager into agreeing to do the repair for free). Got my MacBook back today, and already it is exhibiting the storage 'stutter' behavior when launching GPU intensive apps like Photoshop or InDesign..  Apparently this work is warrantied for 90 days, so I anticipate returning for additional until this is solved for good.

Well my 2011 MacBook Pro has been suffering from this same problem for months and I just decided to do a search and found this thread. My 3 year extended care expired a few months ago and I'm SOL. I shelled out close to $3000 for this paperweight and got the extra care just Incase. Conveniently it started to exhibit the GPU failure just after it expired. For Apple to ignore these thousands of cases due to their lack of quality control selling us Chinese built garbage for insane prices is just unacceptable. For a company that generated $171 BILLION in revenue for 2013 to ignore THEIR own mistake makes me furious. I only finished paying off my MBP a few months before it decided to die hoping it would last me several more years before I could afford another one.

I Will not be purchasing another apple product again that is for sure. All I have to say is SHAME ON YOU APPLE!!!

Does anyone know if this has affected Late 2011 Macbook Pros with the 6770M?

Original post was about the early 2011 which had either a 6490M or a 6750M

    Late 2011 switched to 6750M and 6770M

Also if it breaks, is it an option to repair it by putting in the MB from the Mid 2012 MBP?
    (these had Nvidia GT 650M's)

This typically means that you tried to access a post that was removed by (for whatever reason) the forum moderators.  Best way to get all posts is to subscribe to this thread and get email delivery (which I assume you already do).

I'm well aware of what it means. I thought others should know that potentially helpful posts are regularly being removed from this thread.

Funny that.  Sort of half-baked censorship. Those who are interested and subscribe get everything anyway.
