Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Ya' know, I'm thinking serious about migrating over to Google Chrome and getting a Chromebook.  That's where automation seems to be really taking off and if I go there I ain't never gonna' come back to Apple, which is quickly becoming antiqated and apathetic.

Right.  I stand corrected.  Hopefully it doesn't also play Brian Eno's Windows 95 launch sound.

Yes that's what I did - emailed Tim Cook but didn't use the standard petition email text - and I got a call a couple of days later.

My temporary fix is to reduce the display resolution (System Prefs>Displays) and not to use any graphics heavy programmes such as Photoshop until I get this fixed. but even then if the machine gets too hot the white lines come back and it crashes...

Can you share what the outcome of your call was?

Lovely how Apple keeps removing this comment. Here it is again.

Same boat here, Late 2011 17’, 6770M. Screen froze, dedicated GPU became completely unusable.

    Adding myself to the list,

MacBook Pro early 2011, 17" 2.3GHz, Had graphic glitches on the screen today.

Issue repeated shortly after reboot several time, now freeze instantly after boot when trying to activate AMD GPU.

Issue appeared in the morning and MBP died completely in less than 20 minutes!

By making it impossible be me to be logged in while on the first page of this thread, Apple is keeping people from replying easily. Its a underhanded way to suppress this problem that would clearly be expensive to fix.

I too have this problem. This *****

    Good news!

As a resident of Quebec, Canada, we have one of the best customers protection laws in the world.

So, after a lot a patience (1 month of waiting), several calls at Apple Care, 3 visits at the Apple Store, the replacement of my MBP 15" Early 2011's logic board is free of charge.

I just hope it won't break again soon like some other people!

Exactly this issue hit me today on a late 2011 macbook Pro. After finding out that this is a kown problem and apple is ignoring it, I lost faith in this company. After Steve Jobs died they lost his path and will probably end up like Microsoft. If apple doesn't know anymore what they are selling, the perfect user experience and feeling their products aren't worth more than the hardware inside. What a pitty!

Sebnapi, its not just a pity, its the end of an empire.

Its a major degrade of a once beautiful concept - unfortunately it seems the vision and the ethos were not passed down from Steve; it will be lost with him.

It may take a few years to run down, but the cracks are already showing.

I guess it shows the importance on one person, and how we, too, can not underestimate our own contributions.

"google up 'seattle fox' and see his victory in the Small Claims Court"

The Google search provides over 36 million hits, and I don't have the time.  There is a story - perhaps related to yours - of a guy who won in "small claims court", and it involved an iMac that was part of an Apple-sponsored recall.  Regardless, I've wondered about this story because of the claim about "Apple's attorneys".  Attorneys are not allowed in Small Claims court.

Now I have this same problem... I got this computer after having a 2007 15" MBP with the over-heating self-destructive graphics chip.  That one I reflow soldered at home and it worked another 6mo before dying.  C'mon apple take your bazillions of dollars and figure out a better lead-free solder.
