Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Add me to the group!

    I have got a 15" early 2011 macbook pro.

I bought this in Australia and got the same issue, graphic card failure.

Sometime it even won't let me to boot, (like death of white screen)

Also, when I connect to the second screen, it just die.

Talked to apple and they told me to change the logic board.

    Quote: $350 + tax

Hopefully Apple can solve this issue for us.

Hi 15-inch MBP late 2011 owners,

Anyone with the same GPU issue, appreciate if you can add value to your complaints by doing the following. Unfortunately, Apple does not monitor this forum.

    1. Call Apple Care Contact Apple for support and service
    2. Point them to this thread. Ask them why Apple is keeping quiet on this known issue?
    3. Get a case number and inform them to follow up with the on-site/certified Apple service provider.

They "should" offer a sound/amicable solution.

    cheers

    Hi there

    I have a MacBook Pro 13 " Early 2011.

It started two months that my MBP on opening the cover  to start with black flickering.

Now it is sometimes gray (like death of screen) and I can not recognize anything anymore.

Only when I send the MBP into standby and then awaken the picture comes back.

I do not know whether you have the same problem, but for me it looks like. Could be a problem with the Intel grafic chips also.

My English is not the best, sorry.

    regards gidion

They talked about our problem on the macbreak weekly podcast. Also on the most popular rumor site for macs...

It appears that my MBP is having the same issue. I stopped at page 189 in an attempt to get to the last page but that quickly became boring so I am posting to the original post.

My MBP has the AMD Radeon HD 6750M. Early 2011. It also has the Intel HD Graphics 3000. I have 8GB of RAM. Not sure what other stats are relevant.

The issue started a couple of months ago (I am running Mavericks) but yesterday DriveGenius Drive Pulse said my hard drive had errors and I noticed that the menu bar was 'torn' off and now in the middle of the screen (I have a 15"). I ran DiskWarrior and all seems fine but it seems to be happening more often, getting the message from DrivePulse that there are errors and I need to fix it. I also noticed that the fan runs really, really fast when I don't think it should-like, I don't use any graphics intensive programs like Photoshop, etc.

So I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread....

conorstewart-I certainly don't have an answer but I would suggest reading all the replies (a monumental task at best!) and see if there is a solution other than replacing the graphics processor AT YOUR EXPENSE.... Not ideal.

Worst option: let Apple replace the mobo and hope it won't fail again.

    Better option:

Use 3th party repair to reflow, reball or replace chip.

    Cheaper and longer lasting.

Put it on sale for parts and buy another, non Apple, laptop.

Just pitching in, I have had multiple GPU failures on a late 2011 macbook pro, I'm waiting for my 4th logic board to get fixed.

Looks like Apple may feel some pressure on this topic soon.

As for my MBP: I'm going to have mine reballed by an independent repair company in Germany who give 12 months warranty on the job, €270 total inc shipping including new GPU. (I'm from the UK and had e-mailed bga_repair who's on this forum, but he never got back to me... not a good sign. The guys in Germany were the only ones who give 12 months warranty. And they even do circuit board level repairs on medical equipment, so looks very much they know what they're doing.)

Will report back as soon as my MBP has landed back in the UK...
