Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I've confirmed myself that the problem must have something to do with GPU, heating. I played a HD video and checked for the temperature. The cpu temp. increased close to 72C, gpu temp to 63C and the blue screen happened. All this time the fan was not working.... it used work until yesterday (I heard the fan noise yesterday, not now).

I'll go and see what apple geniuses got to say about this.

Apple only give 90 warranty on repairs!  That's a joke!

FIrst they sell you a $3000 laptop that fails after 2.5 years.

Then they expect you to pay $675 for a new logic board with only 90 days warranty!

Talk about rubbish products and service!

I always buy AppleCare with any Apple product - you can get it at a discount from several online sources. It saved me the price of a new logic board when my machine failed. I've already purchased a Windows machine but I'm uncertain if I will ever totally disconnect myself from Apple products. Even if only 10,000-18,000 units were affected, Apple needs to at least launch some sort of investigation - it doesn't sound as if they're going to ever take any responsibility for this issue.

After my AppleCare is up, I'm going to go ahead and get a BGA reball, just in case...

I had a chat with apple care the other day and had a call with them just now. I also sent a link to this thread. I think they misunderstood (even though they have my serial no) and said the replacement program is over (for 2006 MBPs I think), but agreed to do a repair for free... Let's see what will happen after the repair.

HOW did you get them to agree to do the repair for free?!?!????! What was your argument and who approved it to be covered?! I'm flabbergasted.

I have late 2011 MBP with 10.7 installed in for repair which seemed to be exhibiting early signs of this issue. (dead screen).

I cloned its hd in target disc mode via my iMac. Starting my iMac from the cloned MBP disc I ran smc1.5 update on cloned HD and turned screen sharing on.

Booted MBP from altered clone disc. It now booted but screen still went dead after startup phase, however I could use screen sharing from the iMac and see the desktop (so graphics card was working but with no output to physical screen.

I then booted from my iMac clone backup on 10.9.4. MBP booted perfectly and all functions worked including running gpu benchmark tests.

Checked gpu drivers between two systems, all AMD drivers were different, working on the theory that new drivers may have been written to help prevent the gpu problems or at least reduce them I have now done a clean 10.9.4 install to the MBP mounted in target disc mode. (this may mean the MBP is running on generic AMD drivers as opposed to a driver specific to its gpu?)

So far the MBP is now booting normally and switching perfectly between gpus.

Now I may just be lucky so far and if there is an internal physical issue in the discrete and gnu then this will probably return. But this process may be worth trying if your experiencing similar issues. I am hoping that this issue is more to do with either the original AMD drivers or the GPU switching control.

No dia 9 de setembro de 2014 bem que podia resolver esse problema que afeta muitas pessoas!!!

Eu fiz e a macbook pro 17 está com uma sobre vida!

         1. Start up in Single User Mode (hold down CMD-S immediately after startup)

         2. Get ready to move System files by typing the text that I've underlined mount -uw /

         3. Create a directory to move the Extension files into by typing mkdir /System/Library/DisabledExtensions

         4. Move the files by typing mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* /System/Library/DisabledExtensions

         5. Type exit

         6. you might need to type exit again to reboot.

i am also from germany and want to add my case here... sorry if my english is a little strange

i have already posted it in similar threads but here are already 534 pages...over 1 million views!!!! and still apple is ignoring us?? - that is just outrageous (i didn't find a more terrible word for this in my dictionary unless i want to use name-calling profanity)

i hope that this issue will be brought to court and people will not let apple get away with this

i know they dont give a (you know...) because they only want that you buy the latest products (now you are forced to... that is the new business strategy that is unfortunately escalating more and more...)

my "apple service provider" has already replaced the logic board of my MBP aug 2011 3 (!!!) times - not to mention that i couldn't do my freelance work at that time - and now i can wait that this one will fail as well

of course, because they use the same faulty gpu - it is so stupid that i can hardly believe this is really happening

i called apple already several times, wrote to this tcook from apple directly, got a friendly but not at all helpful answer from an executive in ireland...

posted on apple feedback site etc

but all they offer is new defective logicboards - it is very annoying and you feel like you are talking to mentally disabled persons

and it is just no more fun to work with my MB ;-(

i would say: apple is dead... literally...

Over the last 20 years I have heard that more than a million times, yet it has never happened.

    Don't hold your breath.

yea, they will probably make even more profit, i don't know

but i mean, that what apple was meant to be (what we liked about it) is dead ;-(
