Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

When I chatted with them, I sent a link to this thread but then they told me to reset PRAM. But as I guessed it didnt work. So I called apple today and asked them to read my previous chat. After reading it, the representative told me the free repair period is over for this matter. I guess she misunderstood this has to do something with the MBP2006 even though they have MBP's serial no. And she also told me she talked with her manager and got the permission for a free repair.

They arranged the courier service also. But they might say it is not free later... fingers crossed!

Add my Late 2011 MBP to the list. I've tried all of the suggestions in this thread but to no avail — or temporary at best. The only solution I've found is to reset the PRAM while rebooting, and it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 reboot attempts to actually boot up. Once it does, I'm good for awhile as long as I'm careful (see below).

Sometimes it dies upon wake-from-sleep, sometimes seemingly randomly, but there *are* certain specific things I can do that are guaranteed to kill it immediately:

    1. Launch Photoshop. That's it, just launch it and I'm dead.

    2. Try to modify an image in Preview in any way. I can open images to look at them, but can't make any changes.

    3. Doing anything in iMovie.

    4. Accidentally saving an image attachment in mail to iPhoto instead of to the downloads folder (those are adjacent options).

I'm sure there are others, but to me the weird thing is that I can work in Lightroom all day long without a problem. I bought this as a Best Buy open-box item and they included their extended warranty for free, but I'd really like Apple to own up to this problem. A new Apple store just opened here in town so I'll be taking it in just as soon as I find a time when I can reasonably give it up for awhile.

I guess you talked to the same apple-don't-care person as me, who told me that two logic board defects are "coincidence"

Add myself to this list (unfortunately).  I have a MBP 15" late 2011.  It started about 2 1/2 weeks ago, in my case the first symptom was the screen getting completely distorted while in a Skype meeting ( Had a second monitor connected). After the distortion, the screen when black and the computer froze.

When I restarted ( hard reset ), I was greeted by a blue screen ( with some vertical stripes). I did all the SMC, NVRAM and PRAM reset. After that it didn't show the blue screen, but I was stuck in a white screen and the fans started going really fast and started to overheat.

I followed some of the advices here and started in single user mode (CMD+S) and moved some of the AMD* and ATI* driver sout of the way. That allow me to boot the computer into a very slow and unstable system ( the overall temperature of the computer was 25 - 30 degrees higher after moving the drivers, according to iStat, it was certainly hotter even if I was doing nothing with the computer).

I returned the drivers back to were they were, since I felt that the machine was overheating. After that, I was able to boot ( after like 15 tries).  I have gfxCardStatus installed.

Every-time I turned the computer off was a gamble since wasn't certain if I will be able to boot it again. Well... today it seems like I lost the gamble. I tried for hours to boot it. I had to go an get another computer today  ( since I work remotely from home ).

I'm not located in the states, and was quoted 1,200+ USD for the repairs. This is unacceptable, this expensive brick that I now have didn't even lasted for 3 years. Is this the new Apple after Steve Jobs?

I think it is not a joke any longer... requesting to purchase expensive replacement logic boards that will to fail again just after the warranty expires, failing to acknowledge the design defect, keeping it low from the public and telling that it is "coincidence" while there are so many people having the same issue... and actually making money on it... it is, in my view, called: sophisticated organised crime.

My gpu has also gone bad. Hoping apple will step up, or at least acknowledge the huge number of people that are experiencing problems...

another to join the ever expanding club..

    MAcbook Pro 2ghz intel core i7 15" early 2011

AMD Radeon HD 6490m gpu dead

can currently only boot up with amd extensions removed , which as some users have notice runs hot and unstable. But at least gets you to the desktop to save important files hopefully before the whole machine dies.

    remember apple ... Think creative...

we all paid the premium price because we didnt just won't to surf the net, we could have done that on a cheap £500 laptop. We paid for what we thought was a premium product to run music software , photo editing and film editing Etc. the creative things your adverts told we should use them for. So we're more than a little disappointed when your hardware hardly lasts more than a couple of years.

    Now. It's think cheap.

Fab it at the lowest cost and sell it as a premium product. That's how you lose customers, after reading this thread I'm now starting to lose trust in all apple products, which is really sad for a company once so far a head of the curve.

Same here... PRAM reset many times, safe boot, and then reboot, and after many attempts I usually get lucky enough to get it going. Like you, I have to be very careful with what I am doing.

I took my MBP to the Apple store today and they knew what the problem was without even doing any diagnostics.

I wish I had known about this during the warranty period, because I had the occasional failure during that time, but I would just reboot and all was fine, so I assumed it was an app causing a glitch.

update: received my MBP today after some delivery hiatus. when I first sent it to my Uni supplier I bought it from a few months ago, they were clueless and found nothing wrong; after I sent it to them again with plethora of pictures and links to this thread, they found nothing wrong with it again, at which point I told them to send it to what thranspires to be an 'authorised Apple Provider', who replaced the logicboard. but the best bit to come out of this saga is this piece of paper the latter sent me, where description of the problem is recorded thus: 'crashes under normal use'. quite a promotion!

It has been 3 weeks since I had reboot and screen failures.

At a seemingly unrecoverable death, I followed the procedures for deleting my GPU extensions:

    1. Start up in Single User Mode (hold down CMD-S immediately after startup)

         2. Get ready to move System files by typing the text that I've underlined mount -uw /

         3. Create a directory to move the Extension files into by typing mkdir /System/Library/DisabledExtensions

         4. Move the files by typing mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* /System/Library/DisabledExtensions

         5. I ALSO  mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* /System/Library/DisabledExtensions

         6. Type exit

         7. you might need to type exit again to reboot.

Apologies if moving AMD & ATI are a novice redundancy, but I have had uninterrupted service for 3 weeks, no problems at all.

I use Photoshop & illustrator commercially, so I work the machine pretty hard graphics wise 8 hours a day.

I also loaded a fan speed app which slightly over responds to the temp of my GPU.

From GFXstatus I note that my computer does not switch (or can not) from intel HD graphics 3000.

So far no problems, but I understand this is a limited fix, hoping to last me until Apple offer me a rainbow, or I can afford a new one.

I also see other users warning me that this can ultimately overheat the main logic board or kill my intel Graphics chip too.

However, this is working fine for now.

Host deleted the message from JPH39 (got a copy by mail) and removed the link to petition from actionman99... I think it is sign of frustration at Apple about this forum.
