Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Ok another one bites the dust here also...

I haven't read the entire thread (for obvious reasons - being about a gazillion pages long..) But same old story here. Took a dead Late 2011 MacBook Pro into Apple Store to see a 'Genius'. I explained the problem saying it's massively widespread - reports all across the internet etc. I said the symptoms are that the MacBook Pro overheats causing GPU failure ultimately needing a logic board replacement. I said there was also a petition to Tim Cook to get Apple to acknowledge the fault etc. although Apple 'Corporately' have failed to admit there is a problem. The so called 'Genius' then insisted that he apparently had no knowledge of this problem at all, and all he offered me was an out of warranty repair for £435 (UK) for a logic board replacement. I kept insisting that I was not prepared to pay for a repair, since this was an inherent fault with the machine.

So I go out of the Apple Store very disgruntled at their Corporate greed and failure to admit there is even an issue.

I've been a long time Mac user and Apple fan since I bought my first Quadra 630 almost 20 years ago. It's incidents like this that really make me lose my faith in them. It's the second MacBook Pro I have had, which has failed - yet my Dual 2Ghz G5 tower is still going strong to this day. I look after my Mac's as they're my pride and joy, so I know when there is a hardware fault of this nature it is not down to mistreatment or general wear and tear, but an inherent fault in the hardware design.

Come on Apple, get off your backside and sort this out!!

I would ring Apple UK up and mention the sale of goods act you may get it done for nothing

Though I personally wouldn't let Apple do what I believe is a poor refurb repair. bga-repairs on ebay change the GPU for £179 you ship the MBP to Gloucester iirc .  Referred loads of clients there and not one failure yet.  Mine will go there when it goes bang! Keep the receipt if Apple eventually cave in and give you a refund!

Though when mine does go pop I will be very tempted to visit the small claims court and file a case asking for my money back!

I can expect this kind of service standard from Samsung... but definitely NOT Apple.

Starting to regret asking my friend to buy MacBooks with me back in 2011.

Both of our Late 2011 MacBook Pros are dead now because of the same GPU issue and out of warranty coverage.

And Apple, I'm not gonna spend another $800 just to fix up YOUR DEFECTS.

    Absolutely disgusting.

in a litigeous souciety where the national pastime is lawsuits

Just to make you aware ----- in regards to individual citizens most of society isn't litigious.  The truth of the matter is the overwhelming majority of lawsuits are from corporations against individuals, not the other way around.  The corporate media tends to highlight frivolous [or otherwise] lawsuits from individuals which makes it appear that individuals carry the bulk of legal actions in the United States, which is utterly untrue.

I just want to make sure you're not unintentionally perpetuating this falsehood with your vague statement that society is litigious.  I think one only has to look at how unfairly Apple is treating their early 2011 MacBook Pro customers by not addressing this obvious defect to know that Apple isn't particularly concerned about lawsuits from individuals.

I think our only hope is to continue to pressure Apple to properly address this issue and issue a recall and replacement program for the defective units.

I am appalled that apple has not addressed this, we have 3 2011 machines in our office that recently had the graphics failure.  What are our options?

And you can support those statements with some actual data I assume,

    Why didn't you?

Well pay apple $700 for repair.

    Complaining to Apple gets nowhere.

Try a 3rd party repair - reballing GPU. This did not work for me but has worked for some people.

Another one here: early 2011 15" MBP, mine from new, it's my main business machine so total failure at 4.30 on Friday pm is not the end to the week that I was hoping for. All attempts to reboot result in a blue screen.

Like another correspondent on this page I've been Apple since the word go but this seriously dents my faith. I wonder if I can get to Gloucester before you!

    Same issue.

At first I thought it was the SATA cable causing the crashing of the computer, because I recently opened it up and installed a SSD.  But now, unfortunately I realize it's the ******* GPU.

This is a big ******* head ache.  My loyalty to apple is waning.   Cheap chinese made garbage.

    And yet another one...

Mine is a Late 2011 MacBook Pro. A few weeks ago I was working and suddenly all 3 of my screens blanked out. One was pink, one was white and one was green. All had vertical lines running through them. It was sudden and without warning. Then my fan kicked into high gear. After about a minute I force-quite my laptop.

So here is what typically happens. (It's happened about 10 times in the past 2 weeks.)

Screens go blank, dark, or colored.

    Force-quit the machine.

Reboot (Sometimes 2 or 3 times that end in a blank gray screen)

    Reset PRAM

    Reboot in safe mode

Verify disk and disk permissions. Then fix them.

Reboot and it works fine until the next black out.

Now it's getting to where sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Come on, Apple, we didn't do anything to deserve this. Make it right.

With $40,000,000,000 in the bank you can afford it.

Well, I now have the same issues with my son's 2011 (April) macbook pro 15".  I even had apple care on it (which expired 5 months ago).  I'll be watching this, and see what happens with my attempts for repair...

    Another one...

Mine is a late one, December 2011. I am from Canada and I paid 670 $ last month to have a new logic board.

My computer crashed this morning and the card graphic needs to be replaced and now I have a blue screen and of course...  Like a lot of people, it's my business machine so I can't work on it and I have to wait 1 week for the next Genius Bar appointment available, just to bring it.

if the USA was not lawsuit crazy, I think of the MacDonalds hot coffee case, malpractice insurance in the USA anyone?

If the US is not lawsuit happy, then why is Apple reluctant to address this issue, or even make a single statement in regards the 2011 MBP? "check"
