Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

If you can accept that this aberration is unique to the MBP, then you might consider the Mac Mini as a solution (until Apple owns up to its responsibility in this).  For my part, I chose the most basic Mac Mini (4GB Ram, 500 GB HD) - I took the RAM from the MBP and swapped (they're compatible), and then added the 1TB SSD from my MBP (also compatible).  This then creates a 16GB RAM, 1 TB SSD without a major investment.  /Essential difference is i5 Core Processor vs. i7 in MBP, but this is better than struggling with a crippled MBP.  Your thoughts anyone?

I struggled with same dilemma!  The problem as I saw it is that you are now forced into the Windows world, bereft of problems - not to mention the software investment.  You might consider my previous post to JPH39.

Add me to the list. my 2011 MBP Bluescreened and now only goes to low res apple and grey screen.

Does anyone know how long it took apple to repsond to the imac 2011 graphics card issue??

And I wonder how many problem imacs it took for them to set up the repair program?

I've just sent my concern to Apple via Feedback, since I know Apple do check their customer feedback (not so sure about their support forums...)

I encourage everyone who hasn't done it yet to do the same. Good luck.

    What "bereft of problems"?

Depeding the software you use, some licencses can be transferred to windows.

There are often also free alternatives to get you started.

Hardware wise a macbook pro is not better then a pc laptop, nothing "pro"  on it.

For me, Apple has allways been overrated and overpriced.

They also seem to fail more then pc laptops these days.

At least here we get more macbooks in to repair then pc laptops.

Using the same cooling system for faster cpus and gpus... not wise.

Newer models are even not upgradable or hardly repairable at all.

For the ones doing 4k video editing...

    On a laptop? Seriously?

Best in vestment for heavy graphic tasks is a desktop, mac or pc. Laptops are ment for portability, not workhorses.

For the price of a macbook pro you can get a good pc desktop + a laptop and might still save money.

And you can upgrade the desktop easily if needed.

There is also the Hackintosh options...

Which "experienced techie on ebay" did you use? I am looking to go down that route. I would be disappointed if it doesn't work. It's not exactly cheap.

Add me to the list of people having this issue. My early 2011 MBP has been performing slow for about a month (slow boots, color wheel often). I cleared PRAM, booted in safe mode, trying disk utility from disc... no luck. Couldn't get past the blank grey screen. It would hold for about 30 seconds and then shut down.

My very weird solution for getting the machine to boot finally? Tilting the MBP toward me at a 90 degree angle. I don't know why but it finally allowed me to boot through to login and backup files. Maybe it's a heat dispersant solution, maybe it's the way the chip sits, or thermal glue runs? Who knows.

Took me long enough to find this thread once I realized it was the logic board/GPU.

Sadly, we all face the same fate - replace the logic board or get a new machine.

HI, I'm also facing this problems.

Apple wants 1100$ to replace my logic board. The same logic board replacement costs 310$ to some people.

I wouldn't mind paying the flat fee that is being offered to some people that uses the same machine, with the same problem. I just want my computer working.

    Caution

Dont spend 1100$ for a new logicboard! - it will not last very long and you have the same problem again.

I had already 3 logicboard replacements! the 2nd one lasted only about one month and then again the gpu failure occurred...!

I only did it because i didn't have to pay for it (still had something similar to apple care - but thats over now...) but i know it is stupid

because it is not really a fix, its only a delay....

please be aware that replacing the logicboard doesn't do it (or only for a short time)

    see my previous post...

    hey there everyone!
unfortunately im also on the same boat as you all.

i tried moving all the AMD/ATI kext files from the /Extensions folder into another one so it would disable this drivers.
but in the end it got worst than when i was trying to just use the integrated card with the gfx software thingy.

    SO MY QUESTION IS:

how do i go back to the original way the AMD/ATI drivers were setup??

at first i thought it was just a matter of moving the kext files back to the /Extensions folder.
but that didnt do it! are there special procedures to be done?

i got this error while running in safe mode

    IMG_20140915_094930526.jpg

then i tried doing the kextload thingy and this is what i got:

    any ideas?!?!

    HI,

install this software cindori kextdrop and go to the folder where you saved the kext files and drag them inside the app and reboot.

    ill try doing this!

just another question. should i try installing ALL the AMD kext that are in the folder?! or are there only i few i need/should install?
