Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

IF by any unlikely chance Apple would man up and actually fix or replace the THOUSANDS of broken Macbooks, does anybody know, if you were to be able to use the offer, if you had taken steps to fix the problem yourself? Like reballing or reflowing the solder, changing the GPU or having the Logicboard changed at a unauthorized repairshop?

Aha, my logic board replacement lasted for 9 days. Still experiencing same kind of errors. This is very frustrating, I am waiting for another fix, but thinking seriously to sell all my apple stuff (FireWire interfaces and hard drives plus thunderbolt stuff as well) and go back to pc. Very very very disappointing.

I see apple are removing my posts directing people to support websites for people with same issues.

Please google 'macbook pro 2011 change' to support us all on this issue.

Your posts are being removed because even though you agreed to the terms of use for the site you have proven not to be capable of keeping your word.

But that's not at all surprising.

    now that's interesting.

how is that not surprising at all to you, is there some kind of history between you two?

or is it just you being as you can't help but being?

Yes why is that not surprising. What have i missed? Do you know me?

If Apple can remove my free speech post then fine Ill just ask people to google the topic.

Why is it Apple can remove posts they deem unfit or damaging, but not post a simple answer to a problem 550 pages long!

Because the posts transgress the terms of use, the terms you also agreed to.

Personally I agree with removing posts from people who can not keep their word.

So yes, I know you, you agree to terms and then break them., I hope that clears it up for you.

That's hilarious, (it would be better though if the picture was actually inserted properly)

    So I'll just imagine it.

Are there 2 of you? or are you using the Royal 'we'

+1,2011 MBP 17, hung on boot screen with blue strips, just like my 2010 MBP 15. Will it occur on my 2013 MBA?

Mine has 'gone' this morning.  MBP 2011 - later one though .

Pixelating, followed by striped lines overheats then shuts down...re-starts after a cool down period only to repeat within 30 mins of use.

Just installed gfxCardStatus and set to integrated to see if this will buy me some time before it goes off to be looked at by Apple.

My 2011 MBP has replaced the third piece Discrete Graphics Card
This is not what I spent 15 years of MAC quality
This is not Apple! This is definitely not Apple!

Guys you should give feedback to apple:

This is a end user forum and despite being moderated there will be no follow ups from apple to the problems people complain.
