Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

 

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

 

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

 

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

 

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

 

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card? 

 

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

 

4) Is there any other alternative?

    People HAVE given "feedback" to Apple, to no avail. Almost all the useful information I have been able to find about this problem, I've found in this thread (or on the "secret ranting sites" we aren't allowed to link to). Even if some of the messages in this thread doesn't contain a question or an answer it is very good to know, that a lot of people are experiencing the same symptoms, and that they have had no luck in contacting Apple.

    I used vaiorefurbs on ebay for reballing and it didn't work, some other issue with logic board.

    Reballing is no guarantee of a fix and this guy had 100% feedback.

     

    2nd time to Genius Bar yesterday, Apple won't accept any repsonsibility for faulty logic board.

    Only option is $750 repair.

    Apple will not take any responsibility for a failed repair performed by a 3rd party.

    Hey, let's not allow CSounds1 to derail the thread. Ignore him and he'll likely go away. If he doesn't, just keep ignoring him. This is too important an issue to let stuff like this dilute things.

    Well... I think we should not forget why this forum should be used for... When I went to Apple they informed me that in case Apple starts a replacement program, they will just reimburse repairs made by official stores or premium stores.

    nothing posted here is anything new, only useful to post again and again the same stuff is for new comers to get valuable informations without wasting time scrolling back the 550+ pages.

     

    what Apple says now when questioned about this issue is the same as I experienced in february, they're looking into it, they can't predict or promise anything but would give money back if a recall was to happen for those who paid them for a repair, or two, or three...

    Agreed. It's just that getting into a ******* match with Csounds1 — whether he's an Apple employee or just some self-proclaimed defender of the company — only serves to make this thread that much more difficult and frustrating to browse. All of us with this problem are already frustrated enough by the issue itself, without getting wrapped up in Csounds1's vitriol.
