Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I welcome myself to the same problem.

Just had a chat with Apple and the answer to me was "There is nothing I can do about this."

Their answer for this discussion was: "They are looking into the issue, that is all I know."

Thank you Apple, I really appreciate your wisdom!

    Count me in..

So my 2011 15" MacBook Pro just crashed right after 3 years of not very heavy duty work.. Paying 22000 SEK (roughly 3100 USD) for a laptop computer that isn't designed to work for more than the guarantee time surely won't happen again.

As of now I can't even get it to start, and to pay for a repair for an issue that I didn't make happen and that I know will occur again in a short amount of time is not on my agenda. As a student I can't throw money around me.

The complete silence from Apple on the matter is extremely frustrating.

If all of this was not SO TRAGIC it would be funny...

It looks like they designed these computers to work for 3 years and then self destruct.

    BRAVO Apple!

    Steve come back!

Add me to the club. I can barely open up iPhoto for 30 seconds before my screen freezes. I now have a completely useless laptop.

Even though it might be futile please remember to send feedback to Apple

    Happened to me, too.

The first time, my screen went grey with black vertical lines, with the first reboot it worked fine but some days later it happened again and then after each reboot it started with white horizontal lines and it was stuck on a grey screen (without the horizontal lines) after the Apple logo.

I tried reflowing the GPU and it worked for a couple of days but it ended up failing again.

I managed to boot the OS by removing the AMD*.* files from /System/Library/Extensions, but there are permanent horizontal lines, the colors are distorted and the overall performance is really bad.

I've had this same issue happen to me again a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to deal with it ever since.

Been to an Apple Authorised Centre here in the UK so they could assess the problem with the machine and the result was the same as reported here in this thread. The cost for the repair is £408 with VAT, however, it could be covered by consumer law. Now, for me, there are several problems with this, first, I've bought the laptop abroad and after taking it to an Apple 'Genius' Bar, the person who attended to the problem failed to recognise there was an issue as well as a long discussion occuring online, after being finished with the tests, he finally said I'd have to take it up with the retailer and immediately washed Apple's hands from addressing the issue as well as replacing the logic board. Second, even if the logic board was replaced, from what I've read in these forums, there are several cases of the replacement failing again soon after, and that solution is far from dealing with the actual problem with these machines. Meanwhile, I haven't been able to work and have important projects in stand-by because of this issue.

I've spent more than several thousands on Apple products in the last 15 years and feel I've been treated unfairly and dismissively upon contacting Apple. Although I currently use OSX software for work, because of the way this is being handled, I'm considering a move to other platforms as well as abandoning Logic as my main workstation for film post-production work and my music projects.

oh my you just fell from apple's money making scheme! Why did you donate your money to Apple? Apple is **** rich already! Replacing logic board won't fix the problem.

1st) Held the option button on mac bootup and went to the restore view.

    2nd) restored/re-installed the mac x OS

    3rd) rebooted... and.......

    PROBLEM CAME BACK!!!

    BLA!!!!

and 8,351 Replies to this post... and when I talked to Apple via chat they said I need to bring in my Mac for support and

they will be able to provide a price for replacement for this.....

hmm.. In car industry issues like this are classified as lemons I am kind of surprised Apple is slipping to its quality.

really really said.. If I wanted this type of quality I could have just saved my money and gone with a walmart laptop..

Do US all a HUGE Fav..

Please let us all know how much it did end up costing you for the repair. Cause at this point we all do want to find out if its worth the time to repair or just cheap to just replace the MAC with a new PC.

I looked into logic board repair and for my 17 inch the logic board is about a 1000 plus repair fee which is 300 to 500.  So I'm looking at a 1500 dollar repair most likely.   So given that the graphics in a new logic board tend to fail as well, I may as well spend the money on a new computer.
