Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

tfixrepairs has an excellent reputation from Londoners - on a couple of other boards that I read they come up tops. I've read of at least 3 dozen customers and all have been quite pleased with the service.

    Good luck,

tfixrepairs get nearly all of my referrals for PC laptops as they are my local reball service here in South London, I pass their Mitcham and Tooting premises twice weekly. However for MBP's, the 2011 and these GPU's in particular I refer them to bga-repairs on ebay and get them shipped 150 miles away to Gloucester instead.  Tfix are good but I get less (zero) failure rates getting them lead reballed by them.

    That sounds strange.

Who did you get the call from?

I am very curious as I just received an email from an a Apple CND Analyst that my repair was on hold because they had some questions and wanted to have a phone number at which to reach me.

Does anyone know what a CND Analyst is?

Given the testing done at the Apple Store it doesn't make any sense to me that this could be software related

I received the same call. Spoke with the CND. Apple is doing a "Engineering recapture program" and wanted my 2011. I had the option to repair the 11 again or they would give me a 2012 refurb with a 1 year warranty.   Just got a Fedex that the 2012 it is on its way...

We shall see... we shall see....

I see the early 2012s had the same issue though.....

@burmeseday: Congratulations on your progress, hard won I see, based on your many previous posts.

I too have this same problem since a couple of days ago, but am based in Ireland. There are no Apple Stores / Genius Bars here (but an Apple European HQ!).

Are there any others in Ireland reading this thread? Or does anybody have any suggestions about what I should do?

I'm loathe to go down the road of having it fixed by a third party:

    a) because of the crazy cost,

    b) because I feel (like everybody) that Apple should look after me, and

    c) because I don't want Apple to wash their hands (down the road) of any repair work done to my MBP by a third party - especially if this is likely to occur again (and again).

Thanks for all the spirited discussion to date.

P.S. I should say that Apple are obviously monitoring this, since they deleted a similar post I made on a separate thread a couple of days ago. I guess this isn't a surprise to anyone though.

    In the same boat...

Less than 6 months ago, my MBP 17 inch was fixed of Logic Board and other problems likely caused by overheating of GPU or whatever is it causing the problem. It has not been 6 months yet and it is already giving me problems.

First I have 1 Blue Vertical line going across the screen that is on top of anything in the screen.

Second it is starting to not want to boot up.

This is ridiculous considering it always has a fan blowing air to it. Honestly, the engineering in this machine is horrible.

Just got told to take it in for diagnostics... we will see.

New member.  Bought my MacBook Pro 17 inch in early 2011.  From day one there were issues with the logic board.  After several failed attempts to get Apple (through Melrose Mac) to fix it, I convinced the Apple Store at the Grove to replace the entire computer.  The problems continued after that even with a new computer.  January 2014 I had the replaced computer repaired for the same logic board issues and without even consulting me, they upgraded my operating system to Lion, causing me to lose many valuable programs and my Entourage mail archive.  The repairs cost me several hundred dollars.  Today, I had to take my replaced-repaired computer in for the SAME issues and the repairs are no longer under the 90 day warranty.  I'm now looking at paying a further several hundred dollars for the new repairs.  It seems Apple has known for a long time about these defective MacBook Pros and hasn't done a **** thing about making good on them to their loyal customers.  I own pretty much every Apple product in multiples and this is how they treat their customer base.  Unbelievable.  I wish there was an option to using Mac products because they simply do not last and the workmanship is lacking.  This is not the image Apple wants conveyed to the world.  Buyer be VERY AWARE when purchasing Mac laptops.  I paid 4 grand for mine and the repairs and diagnostic fees have added on at least another thousand.  The whole situation makes my blood boil.

Apple do not monitor the threads, the system works like this. Another poster objected to your post and reported it for moderation. The moderators reviewed and removed your post. You were sent an email telling you why.

Same issue here. I had 3 macbooks before this one and the HW they had worth the price I paid, I feel like Apple is taking care just about iPhone market now.

Yup... "Bending in your packet iPhone 6/6+" is all they care about now days...

They had a huge problem with iPhone 4 losing signal and they didn't do a thing about that. Instead they gave free rubber bumpers that prevent that issue...

I think they are trying to figure out what rubber thing can fix this issue and when they discover that (somewhere in year 2052) they will do a replacement program. Rotten Apple they become.

Clearly you need a bigger packet.

No, a standard TM backup includes system files.

Also, when I reinstalled the OS off the Web in recovery mode, didn't that give me a fresh install?

That depends on whether or not you erased the disk before reinstalling, did you?

Here another guy to be added to this list: Blue or splitted screen.

I own a late MBP 2011 and 2 years & half later the only thing that now I have is a useless notebook. It's unprofessional and a shame. If Apple wants to focus only on iphone and tablet market why do they still sell unstable notebook or even computer. That's gonna be a big big marketing mistake.

    2 years and half for a laptop....UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
